Can anyone advise if there is any affordable transportation from the campus to the Richmond Airport? I was wondering if there were shuttles or a bus or perhaps a way to see if there are students driving there to share the ride?

I thought there was a $20 flat fee… I forget where I read that… Oh here found it, thanks gmail: http://www.uvastudentcouncil.com/student-services/initiatives/uvairbus/

Thanks for the link. I hope someone will offer some other options because with only 1 pickup and drop off for the breaks, it makes it a little complicated to coordinate appropriately.

You’re not going to beat $20 to Richmond, it’s $20 just up to the CVille airport!! There is always a bus to NOVA too and it only leaves once. You just have to schedule properly but it’s not overly complicated…

Twenty dollars from Charlottesville to Richmond is a great bargain.

I know that the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport is dinky (or, at lest, was when I was there in the '90s), but is Richmond really so much better that it’s worth the hassle? I wouldn’t know. Just asking.

Only if you get a better priced flight… A lot of people go up to Dulles instead, catching rides with friends from NOVA, but that isn’t something you should try your first year before you have friends from NOVA! Lol.

I’ll admit I have a lot more money now than I did when I was a graduate student, but when I consider the time and cost of getting from C-ville to RIC, it’d have to be a much better airfare to entice me.

I travel more than most and find CHO far superior to RIC and Dulles. You can go from the curb to the gate in under 10 minutes…under 5 if your on an early morning flight. What’s more, if anything ever happens at CHO, the Executive Director is a tweet or email away and she’s quick to respond to travelers who need help (as her staff).

Not having to deal with a 1-2 hour drive (and the stress that comes with traffic!) before getting on a plane is great, too.

I remember airfare to CHO used to cost 300-500 from my home state.

75-109 with Jet Blue to RIC.

You’ll find that fares are competitive these days. I just did a search for CHO-BOS in December and got a fair of $173. The fare for RIC-BOS for the same dates is $123.

Obviously, it’s not going to work with every destination.

I agree. Shop at CHO first, it’s by far the easiest to get to and has plenty of RJ flights going in and out. They’re expanding the runways to be able to accept full-weight mid-range 737s and A320s, meaning soon airfares will drop and locations served will go up. I think they’re scheduled to finish the runway prep by the end of this year, runway extended by next spring/summer. I know the project got heavily delayed this past winter, but it’s still running full speed ahead now. The major airlines out of there are US Air, United, and Delta. Also, some cab service gives (or at least used to) free airport rides to student, or will give a flat rate of $20 for as many people possible (aka, gather up people!)
Dulles is sometimes a pain in the @ss. I suggest first years try to coordinate with their roommate or a neighbor from NoVa if possible if you have to take a flight out of Dulles. You can also try to find a ride from another student, lots of students go up that way. Richmond is a bit harder to find a ride, but the $20 bus is a good option.
