After deferred

What are suggestions for what to do after you get deferred? How persistent should you be?

You should update your application with any new accomplishments and provide the mid year grades that you were probably asked for. There is nothing else to do - your application will now be reviewed again as an RD one. Your goal here is to make your RD application better than your ED application with the goal of making yourself more attractive to the school.

Make sure you invest time in your other apps at this point. You may want to consider whether you want to do an ED2 application (which will commit you to that school if admitted, and your ED1 school will be out of the picture if that happens. )

As disappointing as this is, think about it this way: When you have your RD decisions - which could include an acceptance by your ED school- , the choice will be yours. You can attend admitted student events and reevaluate all your options. These may now include merit, scholarships, honors colleges, etc.

What you thought was your dream school may or may not be. You will no longer be required to enroll. Many students learn more about themselves and the schools they applied to throughout the process, so stay open-minded - not because you have to but because you have been given the opportunity to do so.

Some schools will allow for letters of continued interest. If this school is still your first choice, it could be worth expressing that in the LOCI.

Yes, I agree that it can’t hurt to send a LOCI saying how excited you would be to attend. BUT they know that - you applied ED after all! And if you are applying ED2 elsewhere, or if you want to avail yourself of the choice this turn of events offers, I would omit the part about attending if offered a place. In general, that “i will attend if offered a spot” is more compelling in the WL game as the school is in a different position and you know your options. Your letter can be nice without being committal.

To be blunt, they just had a chance to accept you knowing that you would be obligated to attend if offered a place, and they didn’t offer you a place. Will that commitment on your part change things so much in the RD round that you will prioritize them again? Only you know whether you want to offer them that.

Did the OP apply ED? I don’t see where they said that. This could be the deferral of an EA application.

As with all students, be sure you have applied to a safety that

  • you would be willing to attend if it ends up being your only option
  • you can afford

There are often posts in the spring from students who were a bit optimistic about their chances and find out that schools they thought they were a match for had a different opinion resulting in rejections everywhere. At U Miami their 2021 Common Data set https://www.irsa.miami.edu/_assets/pdf/cds2122.pdf says 1,511 applied ED and 978 were accepted via ED, so 65%. This is a data point about your application strength worth considering.

Go for it. LOCI. Update vs semester grades. Doesn’t hurt to try.

But while Miami defers and admits a lot EA, but ED I would doubt.

Do you want to share your #s so we can evaluate ?

They WL a ton and it’s false hope.

My guess is if you didn’t get in ED u won’t later. Doesn’t mean not to try but get those targets and safeties in. If you need a chance me let us know.

Ahh getting deferred isn’t the best feeling but sometimes it’s a blessing in disguise! Keeping working on those extracurriculars and grades. Don’t lose hope, but as others mentioned above work on other applications. You can’t change anything now, so just keep working hard! You got this! Also, make sure your LOCI is as strong as your other writings. Please don’t leave it to the last minute.
