Ah what a way to spend the new year ;0 helpppppp

A little Letter of Recommendation problem

My AP Biology wrote me a great letter of rec. However, he addressed it directly to UPENN, and I never realised the obvious problem that would arise if I wanted to use that letter for other universities, which I do.

He's already submitted like a couple of weeks ago. Now here I am applying to other universities and they require 2 teacher recc's. I was gonna use him, but I can't because his letter is addressed to UPENN. (I found out that they're automatically submitted if you chose that teacher again for another university (learned my lesson there with Duke, and now I have to call them up and explain.)
I've already tried deleting him as an invited teacher but commonapp won't let me.

Bottom line is:
How can I delete him and reinvite him so his new letter won't be specifially addressed to Upenn?
Does the teacher have to do it himself?

HELPPPPP!!
APPS DUE TONIGHT.

you betcha!

I would bother your teacher sometime tonight, call him up, and explain.

i've emailed them...haven't emailed back.
and i don't know their personal numbers. only their school numbers.

do the teachers have access to re-editing/deleting their letters although they have already submitted it through onilne via commonapp?

maybe other colleges will accept the rec later?

yeah but it would say "x student's choice of secondary school is the university of pennsylvania."

its already bad enough that i already unknowingly assigned that teacher for one of duke's req. letters. now duke has a teacher letter for upenn.

........

ierno i'm thinking of reinviting the teacher but puting a false email so i can atleast make the deadline and talk to my teacher when i get back to school...

can teachers reaccess the commonapp once they've submitted their letters?

yes, they can reaccess after submitting..i'm prtty sure they can...but again, dont completely count on me.

ierno. too late now, i already submitted.
i'm just going to write a letter to the admissions people or email

Sorry this is too late for you, coffeelover, but I'll post it here for others.

Your best bet would probably have been to add him as another teacher, with a slightly different name (e.g., Bob instead of Robert) and no email address, assign the new teacher in place of the already-submitted one, and then ask him to mail a revised copy of his letter. It would have been fine to do this after your school's break is over, as teacher and counselor recs are usually accepted after the application deadlines. What has to be in by the deadline is your part of the package (application and supplement).

Barring this approach, your teacher could unsubmit the letter, then edit and re-submit it. This only works if the colleges haven't already downloaded it by the time he gets this done. Here's a link to some information from the Common App folks about the procedure for unsubmitting a rec letter.

In your case, O Caffeinated One, what's done is done. Don't sweat it, but do contact the Admissions folks about it. They may not be thrilled to be something other than your top-choice school, but they probably won't hold it against you. ;)
