ahhhhhhh!? classes. help me, please.

So ive been reading these threads about which classes to take, and there has been overwhelming recommendations to take calc 155 instead of 150. I'm a biology (pre dent) major, and I signed up for the 155 because of posters saying 150 is verryyyy difficult. I talked to my adviser just now and she was absolutely flabbergasted that I was considering 155 over 150?? She said it was wayy more difficult, and an extra hour, and that I would probably end up dropping into calc 150.

Also, she assumed that i was to sign up for 5 courses? Would it be unwise of me to only take four so that i can focus on them more????

Confused. Thanks.

Whoaa who is your adviser? If you are a bio major take the following:

BSCI 110 / 111
CHEM 104 / 102
MATH 155
FYWS

155 is actually easier. The extra hour is usually a recitation to go over the week’s material, or used to take quizzes. Try 155 first, and if for some odd reason it ends up being too difficult, you can drop into 150, but I would highly recommend 155.

Just to echo the above.

Do what she said.

ooh, i forgot to mention im a transfer. so i received equivalent credit for those courses above. i was just being ridiculous and thought calc would be too much. So i will be taking a writing course, organic, calc, and something else.

My advisor is Yolette Jones. (I think thats how you spell it, i dont have it off hand…) But i think i will go for the 155… she said it was strictly for engineering majors and that pre-meds take 150. I just couldnt believe she told me I would end up dropping 155 for 150!

And thanks, I hope the four class thing works out?? I think it would be a bit overwhelming with five…

155 is a walk in the park as far as math classes go. Especially the first semester and if you’ve had calc before. There were plenty of majors in my section other than engineers btw. I have also heard people say that 150 is harder and that they wish they would have been told to take 155.

what about 155 versus 175 for someone who feels like they have a pretty good base in calculus. i also think i got a 5 on the calc bc ap if that makes a difference.

similar question.

I took calc AB junior year and got a 5. BC scores from senior year pending.

I’m leaning towards retaking calc in the 155 series(i’m in BME). Would that be frowned upon over 175? 3 years of calc is kind of an overkill…

If you did really well on the AP test, I think you will be fine with 175 because it’s basically just derivatives and integrals but with more than one variable. Not a real big deal.

My advisor told me that bio, chem, and calc are too much for freshman, and potential bio majors are not penalized for taking bsci sophmore year, which makes for a much more manageable freshman fall. I’m looking at maybe a neuroscience major, and I’m taking
Chem 102/104/106
Math 155A/B
French 201W
FYWS

I hope that helps! And I too think math 155 would be if not easier at least would be more predictable grade-wise than 150.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you don’t take bio w/ gen chem, then you have to take it with orgo. Faculty have a tendency to baby the freshman, or “first year students” as we have to call them now. You’ll be fine with bio, chem, and calc

I took 150a and b, and I got A’s in both… it really depends on the teacher you have. If you do take 150, make sure you research your teacher. HANDS DOWN the best teacher to have is Justin Fitzpatrick, I am not sure if he is teaching it this semester, but he is amazing!!!

If you are taking the 150’s just be ready to put the time into the class. I think what a lot of people do is blow it off as a Calc course they have already taken. Do the homework on time and ask questions, go to office hours…
