Airbnb question

Trying to plan a visit, and I don’t know much about the neighborhoods around Tulane (except that there are some really nice neighborhoods to the southeast). There are a lot of rentals west of the Tulane campus, in the area bounded by Tulane on the east, St. Charles on the south, Carrollton on the west, and Claiborne on the north. Any ideas on what this area is like?

Air B&B is in big contention in New Orleans right now. Short term rentals are illegal, they always have been. City Council will be ruling on this soon as to how to enforce the laws already in place or other types of regulation. AirB&B’s are causing a LOT of problems in the city and there is a large population trying to outlaw them completely as other cities have. I would be careful about booking because if Council does pass appropriate regulation you may find yourself without a place to stay.

Tulane Ave and Claiborne Ave can be very dangerous.

BTW, New Orleans does not use cardinal directions- it’s uptown, downtown, lake side and river side. :slight_smile:

If you want to stay somewhere convenient to the campus, I’d suggest a St. Charles Avenue hotel before doing an Airbnb. Another place my family enjoys staying is the Westin Hotel. It is on the edge of the French Quarter, right on the river. It is super easy to get in and out of – and it is easy to get uptown from there, no fighting FQ traffic. Plus, you can self park, which is a HUGE plus.

@luckymama64 My wife nixed the Airbnb. She wanted to stay somewhere with a swimming pool. The kids were like, “WHAT?” None of us have any desire whatsoever to go swimming. I had found a nice three-bedroom near Tulane, but my wife objected on the grounds that the rest of us would “all sleep until 10 o’clock.”

“Oh, horrors,” I responded. “We might enjoy ourselves.”

At any rate, a hotel it is. I booked us a large suite at the Embassy Suites Convention Center. I may switch to the Hampton Inn on St. Charles. I go to a Harrah’s casino about twice a year and apparently qualify for free rooms. We could stay at the Hilton Riverside for free. I don’t like the Hilton Riverside, but I love free.

Recently visited and because we were flying in and out of N.O, within 36 hours stayed at the Crown Plaza - Airport which was very close to the airport. Hotel was fine and used uber to get around at reasonable rates, without any problems. Arrived at the airport at 8:00 AM and was still able to get to the school and check in for the 9:00 AM tour by 8:40, though that’s probably not always the case.

We ended up staying at the newly renovated Hotel Pontchatrain. A two-bedroom suite cost about $300 per night, tax included. Certainly we could have done it cheaper, but it was nice not having everyone piled on top of each other.

We had a very nice visit, first to the U. of La., Lafayette for my daughter, then on to New Orleans for Tulane for my son.

My daughter is going to be a freshman at Tulane in a few weeks. This year my son will be a junior in high school. Anyway, Tulane is already mailing and emailing him to come visit campus and about the Tulane comes to you event in our city. We will be visiting my daughter several times this fall. For demonstrated interest, would it be better to have his official Tulane visit next year when he is a senior or do it this fall? Or does
Tulane even pay attention to the visits? We just did the official tour with my and daughter and both sons last year plus the top scholars weekend. By the time the 3rd kid applies I may be able to give the tour myself. Lol

@X22011

LOL. Having a sibling there makes the tour kind of moot, but it won’t hurt to have him officially register for a tour just to have the box checked. This year or next, it is the same. It will be in his file for sure. He can always double check when he sends in his actual application Fall 2017. But since they already have started mailing him, they have an electronic record and therefore a visit will cause them to find his name on the mailing list and click the “start file” button, and check the visit box. Then everything they get from that point on, be it transcripts, test scores, another note that he saw a Tulane rep at his high school or at a visit to your city, whatever. It will all go into that file that has been created. That may not be the exact events literally, but it is essentially what happens.

thanks
