Any recommendation on shuttle services that commute students from Birmingham airport to the UA campus? I’ve already booked my flight and will arrive at the Birmingham airport on the morning of August 12 (a Monday, that is) to make it to the intl students orientation in time. I called housing and the staff said there’s currently no university-operated shuttle that does this and the only advice he could offer me was to get a taxi cab :/

I used Crown Limo once when I did a one way to campus and drive back with son. If there are other riders around your arrival time, you can get a cheaper rate. If it’s just you, it will be over a hundred bucks. But, it’s a nice ride, and reliable. After that, I found a local taxi service run by a husband and wife that I’ve used ever since. They’ve been very reliable and I think their rate was the same as the limo service. Worth it to me because they’re great people and they’re like family to me now. I’ll be glad to PM them your name and number if you’d like, since I don’t think we can advertise on CC.

Thanks! It’ll be great if you can PM the names and number to me!

Meanwhile

does anyone by any chance know any shuttle services that charge a cheaper rate? I was talking to a junior at UA the other day and he said two years ago there used to be a shuttle service that only charges $40 one-way but he couldn’t recall the name.

although I haven’t had a budget in mind but I’d like to have a range of options to choose from.

I’m very surprised that the university does not have a list of all of the foreign students, when they are landing in B’ham, and somehow put together a resource for them. That said, here is what is on the Housing website as a more thorough list of resources to try: [url=http://housing.ua.edu/off_campus/transportation.cfm]Student Affairs | Housing & Residential Communities/url. Good luck!

Some feedback on Tony’s now that my daughter is safely at the airport.

We used Tony’s to pick her up in June and take her to campus for her summer research program. Tony was punctual and very nice, however he did not have any gas or money for gas when he picked her up. He took his car all the way down to 1 mile (according to “miles left” gauge) and then had to ask my daughter to pay so he could put enough gas in to get them to T-town. I did not like this, but the rest of the trip was good and he did provide some additional assistance to my daughter (storage unit trip) for which he was compensated.

Fast forward to this morning. She was scheduled to be picked up at 9:45. At 9:45 am, an individual identifying himself as with Tony’s transportation stated that he was running a few minutes late but would be their in 2 minutes. 20 minutes later my daughter called to tell me he never showed up and that she had called the number on her cell (from the earlier call) twice but no one answered. I immediately called Tony and asked what the problem was. He stated that he talked with his driver at the designated pick up time and his driver reported to him that he was on campus. I explained that at this point he was 25 minutes late and not answering his phone. Tony apologized and told me he would call the driver right away. Five minutes later, now 30 minutes late, the driver arrived. He did not apologize for being late nor did he help my daughter carry any of her suitcases. Yes, this grown man let my daughter load all of her stuff into the car. Their was no air conditioning in the car and when they left, he got on the highway going the wrong way. To add insult to injury, he asked my daughter what time her flight was and when she replied, he stated, well then we have plenty of time. He only had plenty of time because I left room in the schedule for such mishaps.

I would never use Tony or recommend that nobody EVER use Tony’s transportation. My daughter was hot, sweaty, stressed and frankly dismissed by the driver. Two strikes and your are out. EPIC FAIL.

ACR was best option and price for trips that were not during university scheduled times

I’ve used Birmingham Door to Door and Tony’s Transportation several times. As Tony runs a much smaller operation with a more budget fleet, there are some aspects that one might not see with a larger taxi service.

With the housing shuttle, it sometimes costs extra to find a flight which doesn’t involve long waits for the shuttle. I often found myself flying overnight to catch the earliest shuttle as I didn’t want to have flight delays which caused me to miss every shuttle that day.

No, I was also wondering about that in the event DD can’t get a shuttle time to match up with flights. Wonder what the daily rental rate is and what airport parking costs and if parking us onsite at airport or if they need to catch a shuttle.

It would rarely make sense to rent a Zipcar and park it at the airport rather than taking a shuttle or taxi. Airport parking is $10-12 per day and is located across from the terminal or in a remote lot accessed by a frequent shuttle bus. [BHM - Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport : Passenger Info : Parking and Ground Transportation](http://www.flybirmingham.com/passenger-parking.html) Private lots also exist and are $7-$10 per day.

Some students rent Zipcars for weekend trips. There is a limited number of Zipcars on campus, so book early.

DD used a ZipCar a few times last year - we found it to be pretty reasonable for the few times she needed a car compared to the expense of having a car on campus all of the time. There is one parked in front of Lakeside, and I think Riverside and Tutwiler. She enjoyed the chance to run errands on her own at times. (However, she does have a car this year, so using a zipcar was not a long term solution, at least in her mind!)
