Alabama sorority in the news again--should we be surprised?

You seem to start a lot of these threads. Should we be concerned or are you trying to start a conversation?

Not really much new to see here…The Machine is still active, and many schools have Frats/Sororities that group together to elect SG or others…

It’s just one thing after another with these organizations. Poor women, they are so afraid they might not get invited to the right party if they don’t obey. Oops, did I say “women”? Kids.

@kandcsmom I donʻt write or publish the news. It is you prerogative whether you want to make a comment. Both of these stories on greek like were published on the same day—so I thought it a bit intriguing.

This is politics, not a sorority going against its own member. The texts just point out that if individual house goes against the big bad party (the Machine) it will pay the political price (fewer socials). That is no different than an individual homeowner going against the HOA and losing, or a principal going against the school board and losing - each will pay the price of not going along, politically, with the winner.

But, the question is whether that decision was predicated on a member being a black?

This had absolutely nothing to do with her race!!

What decision, boolaHI, the decision not to nominate a member for the court? I don’t think so because the sorority didn’t nominate anyone, white or black.

Please provide factual data that the decision was based entirely without any consideration for her race.

Homecoming Queen?

Some people never leave HS…

This whole Machine thing is ridiculous.

Agree with Momyes that Alpha Gam’s lack of support for Lindsay has nothing to do with her race. If you read the text exchanges, it appears that Mary Harmon would’ve been Alpha Gam’s candidate. However, without the support of the Machine, Harmon elected not to run. The Alpha Gams - recognizing the natural inclination to support a sister (especially a well liked sister such as Lindsay) - are cautioning their members to vote for the Machine candidate instead of Lindsay to avoid political retribution. A sad state of affairs, no doubt. But IMO, the Alpha Gam’s actions aren’t motivated by race. The Machine’s actions may be a different story - especially given that the Alpha Gams seem to have angered the Machine last year by openly supporting the AA candidate for student body Pres.

Good preparation for running for Congress.

I have some inside information and this is NOT racially motivated. Think about it, Alpha Gam supported a black guy for Student government president last year - so clearly race is not the issue. I am not sure that Halle is very liked amongst her sisters and frankly the other girl has a much more impressive resume.

The Greek system’s positives do not overcome its negatives.

That’s a sweeping comment HS5331!

And Homecoming Queen is an important factor when choosing a college? For that matter, who even cares about student government (except pre-law types who think it will boost their app)?

A sweepingly true comment in my opinion…

It’s pretty disingenuous to say this has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with race.

Lindsay’s candidacy is being supported by an organization calling itself “Blend” and promoting greater representation of students of color in mainstream institutions like student government, traditionally white fraternities and sororities, and, apparently, homecoming queen. This is a challenge to the white power structure by one of the sorority’s members, and the sorority is actively choosing – and enforcing the choice – to support the white power structure. That the sorority might have preferred that one of its white members be the official candidate of the white power structure, and that everyone seems to like Lindsay, hardly makes race irrelevant.

But . . . this sorority has an African-American sister, one, and she isn’t afraid to buck convention a bit. Kudos to everyone for that, I guess.

They have more than one African American sister…
