all test centers near me are full

I procrastinated registering for the SAT IIs. Yesterday was the deadline, but because all test centers near me were full, I couldn't settle on a center so I'm planning on late registering. Is there a way to get waitlisted or notified when a test center near me is open? Or any other viable option (special cases)? I honestly find commuting through two states just to take a 1 hour test incredibly disturbing.

I read that registering for any test center, and then going to the nearest test center on test day for standby (replacing the students that don't show up) might work. Is that true? If it is, how do I go about doing that? Do I ask in advance? Please, only experienced people answer this question.

Oh and, if standby testing IS allowed, how do I "bring" the payment along with the registration form? Is it in cash? Do I have to pay the late fee even though I didn't register?

The day or two before your test date, go online to the College Board website, there is a tab for changing test center…you’ll be able to see if there is availability closer to you.

We had this problem a few years ago, and the person we spoke to at college board gave us two options: (1) get the contact info for a convenient test location and try to convince them to open up an additional space for you, or (2) go to a test site on test day and try to do standby. We tried #1 and though the person was very nice, she ultimately decided not to open up space. We decided #2 was too risky; if they don’t give you a standby space, you miss the test date. So S took the test about an hour and a half away from home in order to avoid that risk.
