feels great to have a wonderful safety like hendrix. it will be really competitive with other schools if they give me good financial aid (merit). when will I find out about FA?

You should get a merit aid letter a few days after the acceptance. Congratulations!

Thanks! I’m interested to see what I’m offered with a decent GPA, rigorous schedule and high SATs

Interesting. Rather than receive a merit aid quote today, I received a letter from the director of admission. It says that “we have become aware that you may be eligible to be considered as a possible recipient of the Hays Memorial Scholarship.” It would be fantastic to get that scholarship, but is this letter something that they send to a lot of students? Has anyone else gotten this letter on CC? Did your merit aid quote come in the mail later?

They must send it to a lot of people, actually, because on their site it says you have to apply before Dec 1st for the Hays scholarship. I applied on Jan 1st

I would certainly call and find out if you can still apply for the Hays!

They have a lot of applicants for the Hays Scholarship. Here’s a thread from November: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/hendrix-college/1028241-hays-scholarship.html

In that case I think I’ll skip the app. Realistically, I doubt I’d be in even the top 20 of all the Hays applicants

It’s not a bad idea to try for it if you have the funds to attend campus and have the day free, though. At worst, you’ll visit campus and meet some fellow smart prospective Hendrix students.

Yeah, perhaps I will. I would like to see my current FA offer though. Has anyone else received the “you might be eligible for Hays…” letter, and, if so, when did your financial aid offer come?

I applied in november, was accepted early december, and got my merit based-scholarship-which was very generous- about a week later, so I’d be surprised if you don’t get in the next couple days. I also qualified for the Hays, and even though the odds are slim, the pay off is enough that I’m willing to head down there and compete, assuming I’m invited. I’m pretty sure everyone gets at least some FA, and if you have good SATs and decent grades, you should be getting a nice chunk of change.

hdenton, if you don’t mind, please pm me your FA offer with SAT score and GPA

I got 19k. nice.

plus they accepted all my cc credits (12 credit hours = 3 hendrix courses). im very glad i read about hendrix

congratulations!

thanks denton!

On a side note, is anyone else super impressed by Hendrix’s admissions team? They always make me feel so welcome (“Oh, we’re so glad to hear from you.” “You might want to check out the Hays application” “I was thrilled to review your application!” etc etc). They have top notch people working there.

I’m still deciding whether or not to do the Hays. It will probably be over 100 people competing, right?

Katie Rice is my admissions person, and I couldn’t be more impressed. She’s been extremely helpful. And I’ve had a hard time finding that out- I don’t know how many people end up qualfying, applying, or become finalists. I do think it’ll be upwards of 70 though. Remember that while only 4 get the full ride, four more get free tuition. I also think it’ll be a good chance to meet some smart people who are looking at the school.

good point denton. I’ll apply for it. such an amazing opportunity. I saw that one year 40 kids went, and another year 70 did. So if it were completely random, we would all have at least a 10% shot at getting full tuition. Say the average Hays applicant got $20k in merit and a walloping 80 students decide to go; that means that the Expected Value of going is about ($411k + 420k)/80 = $1.55k . Plus you get a great tour of the campus, the vibe at Hendrix, and get to meet lots of smart and cool people.
I’m going to read some of my poetry. I think that’s my best bet.
good luck to you, denton! I’m pretty sure I’ll be going; see you there if I do!

edit: last year’s page says there were 115 applicants! Wowzers!

I was impressed with the admissions team when I applied, too. I think that’s part of why I ended up attending Hendrix- some schools only sent one or two things and made it clear that I wasn’t considered valuable. Hendrix made me feel wanted, not just another name and test score. :)

Wow, I just got a call tonight checking up on me and asking “if there’s anyone I want to speak to”! I asked to be emailed by an econ major. I can’t say how impressed I am with Hendrix so far. Loren Pope’s description in CTCL only excites me more. If I don’t get accepted ED at Pomona I am considering asking them to reconsider my merit aid once I hear back from my other schools. Do you guys think that would be out of line? Another few k and I honestly think Hendrix might be my top choice. I could save the extra money and go straight to grad school
