I will be applying this fall at almost all the UCs, I plan to major in Electrical Engineering but for some UCs it's tough to get into that major so I was thinking of putting down Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering as an alternate. I wanted to know how alternate major works for transfer. Do they let you in your alternate major if you don't qualify for the first major you picked on your app? I wanted to know if any transfers had gotten in an alternate major here. Thanks.

It depends on the school.

For UCLA, even though you're given the option of choosing an alternate, they won't consider it unless you have the benefit of TAP. This is a pretty uspoken rule and isn't widely understood. For this school, if you're not TAP certified, they simply won't look at your alternate.

I don't know how how the process works for other schools, and I think that it may be different at less impacted campuses.

However, for any of the schools you should complete as much lower division work for your alternate (in addition to your first choice) as possible by the time you apply.

i dont think its possible to do TAP for engr.

Q: Was I considered for my alternate major also?

A: Unfortunately, UCLA only reviews transfer applicants for the first-choice majors. Due to the high volume of applicants each term, we are unable to provide a second review to students once they have been denied for their first majors.

damn UCLA

Eh wasnt referring directly to engineering, was just saying thats the way the alternate process goes.

But yeah, there you go. And they're really strict about it, too. Need an amazing reason just to appeal.
