Does UCLA actually look at alternative major?

Hey guys,

I've been thinking about the major i applied to at UCLA, seems like a bad decision as i have done most not if all the pre reqs for the alternative major while my primary major has some classes missing.

So i am wondering if alternative majors are taken seriously? because i would much rather get in for my alternative major rather then be rejected for missing pre reqs on my primary major.

Any insight on this matter guys?

The alternative major choice for UCLA is just for honors program students, that is the TAP for UCLA. If you are not doing TAP, they won’t take the alternative major into account. That is a benefit for those people who are doing TAP.

I found this on their site:

Q: If I am not admitted under my first choice major, will UCLA review me for my alternate major?
A: Since transfer applicants are reviewed based largely upon major-specific preparation course work, UCLA does not usually review transfer applicants for any other than their first choice majors. If you are willing to be considered for another major you can list an alternate major, but listing an alternate major does not guarantee that you will be considered for that major if you are not admitted to your first choice major.

Hope it helps

Oh damn, Should i call them and find out about this? I don’t want to get rejected because i mixed up my alternative and primary major.

I would call them and ask them to see if it’s possible to switch it. That’ll give you a better chance if it goes through!

Ya right…just call them to see if they allow you to switch it. As I know, UCs dont allow people to change what they applied for after you submitted the application, good luck dude.

Then what is the point of listing alternatives… gahhhhh

^ It’s mostly for people who are applying to heavily impacted majors, they’re qualified but there just isn’t room for them.

Alternate majors @ UCLA are ONLY for TAP students. If you are not TAP, your alternate major will be ignored.

Fudgesicles… anyone know how to deal with this?

i seriously cant believe this is happening to me, two years of work… gone ;(

Unless anyone can help me outt!!

Found this the other day but it’s probably not what you want to hear:

I know people who have gotten into UCLA and Cal with missing pre-reqs though, so you still have a chance. I take it you applied to other schools as well?

Yea i did apply to other schools, but UCLA is up there on my list :frowning:

I will probably have to appeal, because my primary major is impacted. I can’t believe how irresponsible i was for checking off the wrong box.

Does anyone know if having put the wrong major is legitimate grounds for appeal?

You had until the end of January to change your major: [Reporting Changes - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/applicant/changes.htm).

Yea i know, but i recently found out my major was switched up after i opened my UC app and noticed the discrepancy :/

You can call the admissions office and ask to speak to an admission officer. Try back a couple of times if you are getting the run around. I typically have to call 3 or 4 times, or more, to get someone knowledgeable on the phone.

omg u are just like meeee. i feel ya :frowning: i had all my pre reqs done for my alternative major but some were missing for primary major =( i felt soooooo dumb after I found out about this. but in my case…my alternative major was the impacted one. so…i’m just hoping i get lucky. haha (thinking about appealing later.lol)

UCLA TAP means UCLA TAP. Priority means priority and yes they do consider alternative major (~89%) Good Luck.

Oh o k @AskMssun I basically spoke to one women who sounded uninterested and basically just told me nothing can be changed and hung up less then minute of talking. I guess i will try again.

I feel ya. in my case im almost most definitely going to be dismissed for having missed a few pre reqs. Kicking myself for my mistake :(

@uctransfer2012, you probably got a regular staff person. You need to ask for an admission officer.

Speaking of UCLA, has anyone received an email to setup a myUCLA account yet? Cal and SD had us set up months ago.
