Alternate Programs and Campuses

Hey all!

I’m planning to apply to NYU RD, but I was confused by a few of the questions on the Common App.

Question 1: “If we cannot admit you to the school, college, or program above, let us know if we may consider you for the programs below for which space is sometimes available. Our most common alternate program offers of admission are extended to students who indicate an interest in our Liberal Studies Core Program. You should not arrange an audition or submit a portfolio for any alternate choices unless invited to do so. (Early Decision applicants who are not admitted to their primary program of interest will not be bound by the Early Decision Agreement. Instead, they will be asked to accept or decline our admission offer by the deadline outlined in their decision letter.)”
→ does adding programs increase the chances of getting in? (I also don’t entirely understand what the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum IS: does it delay graduation? Do students lose flexibility in classes (since they only have two years to complete major requirements)?

Question 2: general questions about alternate campuses.
→ I personally would rather go to school in the US/NY vs outside of the US. However, does saying that I’m not open to other campuses decrease my chance of getting in? Would I be committing to alternate campuses—is there a chance that they would have accepted me to the NY campus, but because I indicated that I was okay with other campuses they decided to accept me there instead (and NOT to the NY campus)?

Thanks guys!

  1. If you list an alternate, they will consider it if you are not accepted or waitlisted at your first choice. If you are not accepted or waitlisted at your first choice and don’t have an alternate, all they can do is deny you.

On LSP, not it does not add any time. I agree the information could be clearer, but you should still be able to complete in the usual time, doing the first 2 years in LSP core and the next 2 in whichever school/major you have declared. You may need to be very aware from first year what electives you need to take to get there, however. I am assuming academic advising will help here too. (Also note that while LSP is most common 2nd choice awarded, it will still have to be something that they think makes sense for you in terms of your “why NYU” essay.)

  1. Don’t list another campus if you don’t want to go there. If you are happy to go there as an alternative to NYU then list them.

You’ll have the opportunity to choose LSP or Global LSP. Then have your alternate campus choices if GLSP selected.

Thank you @SJ2727 and @EastEnder!

^ I assumed when you meant alternate campuses you were referring to NYUSH and NYUAD? Eastender interpreted it as alternate for the year abroad for LSP? Which of these did you mean?

I meant NYUSH and NYUAD, because I was already planning to put down my preferences for GLP. But it was useful info nonetheless
