So I was recently accepted and am seriously considering attending, but ADOCH happens right when my school resumes after spring break, and taking into account traveling and whatnot I would have to miss a week of school to attend ADOCH. (I have a threatening case of senioritis as it is; I can’t do anything else to jeopardize my grades.) I’m thinking of going for a couple days during my spring break itself. So I’m just trying to sort of simulate an ADOCH for myself since I’m unable to go to the actual thing.
Any recommendations on what to do?
I currently plan to sit in on a class or two, take a campus tour, take an engineering tour, and talk to as many current students as I can without being annoying. I was thinking of also attending the information session.
Are there any things at Brown that you would recommend seeing or doing? Anything that really defined your Brown experience for you or something? I’m just so bummed I can’t go, I just want to fill up on as many activities to experience Brown as I can.
I’m also going to have to miss ADOCH. There are pre-orientation programs right before move-in day and stuff that I’m seriously considering. They take place from the end of August to September 2.
You can also just go for a day, you don’t have to stay Tuesday-Thursday. The program doesn’t even start until Tues evening. So with traveling taken into account, you could probably only take off 2-3 days.
Many people are in your situation. Definitely visit campus, and sign up for Experience Brown! During the rest of the school year it’s intended for prospective students, but in April registration is open only to admitted students (RD only). You’ll be paired with a student host based on academic and extracurricular interests, and they’ll take you to class and lunch in a dining hall. I believe in April there are also some “meet and greet” sessions hosted by Experience Brown where you can talk with a small panel of Brown students. A campus tour and information session wouldn’t hurt either to round out your visit. Have fun!
Don’t go on the engineering tour. It will totally turn you off to Brown. They are in the process of building a new beautiful Engineering buliding (ready Jan. '18) and expanding the department facullty (starting fall '18). They just finished an internal study of how to improve the department and are implementing many great initiatives. The 30 minute tour is a somewhat floundering view of the old engineering building and department. See if you can find students to talk to on campus. The regular tour and info session are well organized, the engineering tour is a mess.
