I’m eighteen years old preparing to apply to colleges and I’m struggling if I’m a California resident or not. Some schools say yes others say no. I was born and lived in California till fifteen. My dad still lives there and I spend the summer there but I went to high school in Oregon where I live with my mom. Having California residency will seriously impact which schools I apply to.
This explains it:

Well I can be a california resident for admissions but possibly not for tuition which I might as well go anywhere. It gets tricky because my parent that lives in California does not declare me on his taxes or something like that.
@Elena3142, if he’s still a resident and you have his permanent address on your applications, it shouldn’t be an issue. You may be stuck for fees depending on which UC interprets your residency status.
You mean his address of as my primary address on my application?
Born and lived in CA before has no bearing at all, FYI.
I think you are not. But read the definitive. Booklet

Well…how will you pay for these CA colleges? You may be considered instate for admissions purposes but not for tuition purposes…and maybe not for financial aid purposes.
How many years have you been attending HS in Oregon?
This issue can be tricky if you’re ALREADY 18. Another Calif parent made a thread a short time ago. His DD lives with her mom elsewhere and they wondered if she could have instate status based on him.
After a lengthy thread of many responses and postings from UC websites, I think the conclusion was that she had to move to Calif and live with her dad before her 18th Bday.
The fact that you were born there and lived there for awhile is not relevant.
There may be some CC’s that will give you instate rates.
@mom2collegekids or someone else.
But for need based aid purposes, doesn’t the student need to have attended a HS in CA for a certain number of years? In other words…would this student be eligible for the Calgrant?
I don’t believe that this student qualifies for Cal Grants or the Blue and Gold Promise because she didn’t graduate from a Calif high school.
May need to apply to a CSU near dad’s home, live with dad, and commute from home…or commute to a CC and then commute to a nearby CSU.
I will not need financial aid but i will need in state tuition to pay for college out of my college fund and avoid student loans.
Well, you can apply to a variety of schools, including a few Calif publics, and if you’re accepted find out IN WRITING if you’d get instate rates based on your particular situation…when you ask, be sure to include your age, where you’ve been living the last few years, etc. They will be able to see from your listed HS that you’ve been OOS for awhile.
Will do
Can you move to your Dad’s and graduate from a CA high school?
I had big reasons for moving from my dads. I couldn’t live in that town again.
^ That could be cutting off your nose to spite your face. Which is more onerous? Going back to graduate HS or paying OOS fees for four years?
Do you have relatives in California who could take you in just next year (Fall 2016-Spring 2017)? This way you wouldn’t have to deal with your dad, but you could still see graduate from a CA HS.
If that’s not possible, then email every single CA public university’s financial aid office to ask what their policy would be.
There isnt any schools in California I love really just schools that might be a safety. Most of the schools I’m applying to are private
OP: Based on your posts, it is hard to see any reason for moving back to California. At this point, you appear to be an Oregon resident. Are Oregon and Oregon State not in the picture?
If you are applying to,and are able to pay for mostly private colleges, why wouldn’t you be able to pay OOS costs to attend a UC or CSU? Aren’t the costs of most privates about the same as the OOS costs in CA?
