I am considering applying to UNC next year and would like to know whether I am considered in-state (my situation is a bit tricky) so I can gauge my chances. Below is some information that might help determine my status in this regard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Born in Durham, NC
-Lived in Durham until age 8
-Moved to Chapel Hill, lived in Chapel Hill until age 12
-Moved to Switzerland where I currently live and where I will be applying from
-Still own property in Chapel Hill which I visit for 1.5 months annnually

I am happy to give any more information if necessary. Thanks in advance for the help!

I’m not familiar with how UNC treats Americans living abroad. It may depend on whether you/your family pay any income taxes in NC, vote in North Carolina, have a North Carolina drivers license, etc.

I recommend you contact residency@unc.edu to ask the Office of the University Registrar (which determines residency) about your particular case.

It really depends on your individual case, as noted above. Jus provide them all the info they ask for, and if they require anymore to make a determination, they will contact you.

This may help you. I have a friend who lived overseas for 3 years with her children. It came time to apply to colleges for her son while they were still living out of the country. Even though they still owned their home in NC, paid property taxes and paid NC income tax, the state university system would not recognize the son as instate.

Seems totally unfair to me and makes no sense!
