With these grades, are my chances at top universities ruined? I know freshman year grades usually don't have as much impact as others, but these grades are horrible! My school is tough, but I could be doing much better. I probably rank in the bottom 15% of my class.

If you do great the next three years, it won't matter too much. make sure you have an upward trend. Also, take difficult (or difficult-sounding) classes.

I'm not sure wat to tell u but I know that most colleges don't look at freshman scores as much as your senior or junior scores. just raise your grades during soph year and you could still have a chance. try to go up instead of down with ur grades and get involved in leadership activities

If you get a C in basic geometry, how are you supposed to get into a top college? Seriously, Geometry is the easiet thing ever. A^2+ B^2= C^2, that alone gets you a B+ in the class. Based on ur grades at this elementray stage, I would say, YES you ARE Doomed. Get your act together.

princeton and a few other schools do not look at your freshman year grades. that being said, you had better hustle if you want a reasonable shot at a top school.

WOAH lol... and i thought i did horrible in freshman year... DAMN MAN LOTTA C's AND B's AND D's(thats horrible dude)... u pretty much set urself in a bad spot... id consider redoing some courses and apply when ur 19 cuz clearly my god man.... how else can we put it.... did u do a lot of ECs is that why u screwed up ur freshman year (i think thats a valid reason to mess up) if not... then i donno man ur kinda in a deadzone right now

by the way, it says ur partially from ottawa ontario?... canada is real easy to score good grades... unless ur studying in states WHICH IS A LOT EASIER... hmm depends where u studied man...

I was a math minor in college, and I absolutely hated basic geometry. Just didn't work with my brain. I think I wound up with a C in it, also, along with a lot of other low grades (due largely due to extended illness). I never really learned basic geometry very well, yet I did fine later down the line (including on the SAT math section), and got into some great colleges. That's not to say that freshman grades (or geometry!) don't matter, but come on.

So no, this is not an ideal way to start HS, but nothing is written in stone yet. You know you want to do better, you seem to think you can do better, and as a freshman, thinking that you might be "doomed" is just ridiculous.

Best of luck in upcoming semesters. Spend some time thinking about what you need to do to bring your grades up, and right now, know that academics are probably where you should be focusing.

Some of the replies in this thread are pretty harsh. Guys, chill out.

In response to your question Jonathan1, you are NOT doomed. You actually have plenty of time to improve your grades and start showing an upward trend. As long as your grades improve and you continue to show an increasing amount of dedication to your school work, you should be okay. Just keep your focus, and work hard :).
