Am I in big trouble?

I'm a california resident and I am planning to apply to most UCs: UCLA, UCI, UCSD, and some safeties. Here's the problem...

my 9th grades are TERRIBLE. average GPA for both semester was around 2.3. And I had gotten one D in World History. (I heard that you have to make them up, if not, colleges will reject you regardless of good ecs, sats, wutever and I'm a senior right now, haven't made it up yet!)

my 10th grade was better... average GPA for the year was around 3.3 with honor classes.

my 11th grade was a huge improvement. 2 AP classes, rest all honors, and had a gpa of 3.7 by the end of the year.

currently, I'm taking 3 AP classes, rest.. of course honor classes and I am aiming for a 4.0 for a full come back....

those gpa are unweighted by the way... My EC's are excellent in my opinion, I am very involved at school, outside school, also won couple 1st places in state music competitions, and etc.

My SAT score is 2200 and I only have one SAT II so far, which is math2: 790. Planning to take korean and bio soon. And also retaking SAT this october.

I really have no idea whats gonna happen for that D I received back in 9th grade. I mean I heard that UCs ignore 9th grade, but what's up with the entire rejection business? Though my OVERALL gpa isn't very high because of my low gpa in 9th grade, do you think colleges will be impressed by my improvement and consider me as a possibility? or is that D going to kill my college life.... I need a response fast so I know what to do... I'm really clueless.. =( What should I do? Oh yeah... my high school one of the top schools in california, magnet school too. and compared to other schools around, it's much more challenging and competitive. some say colleges consider this but i am lost...'

stressedsenior:

UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match
UCI: Safe Match

UCs do not consider use freshman year grades in GPA calculations and probably won't count it against you.

do you guys think taking SATII in november is late? because as you know, that is the only time language subject test are offered. =/ it's a shame that i slacked off on satii's.

taking SAT 2's in november is not "late", but it may be a bit of a rush depending on when you are submitting your applications.

Actually, UC's don't consider freshmen OR senior year grades. Your improvement will help you but I wouldn't bet on getting into UCLA

Not even senior grades? That's awkward, because then students can just slack off during their senior year. It doesn't seem like that here though. I think they count up to 1st semester senior year. I'm not so sure... For college search, what websites (other than CC) did you guys find useful? Books? I am thinking of majoring in neurology or neuropsychology. Any college recommendations? I've heard that if u go to a small college, u can excel there, then transfer to a graduate school which is not that bad. Can someone elaborate on this "method"? Thanks for all the help everyone.

anymore replies? bump

it all depends what you have in mind for your future. the reality is, going to a large or small university is can be both beneficial and deleterious to your college life.

if you are an average achieving student and you go to a large university, you may feel inferior and demotivated by your top achieving peers (your competition). however, if you are an average achieving student and you go to a small university, you have a HIGHER chance of excelling there, thus boosting your self confidence. some people like the pressure while others don't, so it really depends on how you want to do things.

thanks levitt2 for your comment. very nicely stated. I'd prefer smaller universities, because like you said, the student has a higher chance of excelling, and also I believe that with smaller students, you can build a better, more COMPLETE relationship with your friends. Regarding, pressure, I think pressure is involved in all colleges rather it be ivies or community colleges, just that when u go to a smaller school, ur chances are heightened, and there's less intensity. Hence, like levitt2 said, it'll "boost your self confidence." anyone know any good colleges for bioengineering majors or neuropsychology major?

anymore replies? bump! if I were to choose berkeley, what'll be my chances?

Berkley is about 30-40 percent... look at more matches/safties

are u guys sure that UC will accept applicants with D's in their transcript? I have a D during 9th grade. However it does not hinder UC requirements. I really need to know ASAP!
