This will be the first one my son sends out and he's filled out all of the information online, but he's not seeing any place for any kind of writing sample/essay. Does IU just not ask for one? And I assume there's some place after submitting where they request teacher/counselor recommendations?

Nope. It’s easy-as-pie. Essay not required, but will be considered if submitted.

If you son’s stats mean he is being considered for scholarship/honors programs…THEN he will have to fill out an additional application with essays and more recommendations. That consideration is automatic, and they’ll contact him if they want that additional info.

Luck.

Indiana is one of those “by the numbers” schools…DD got in and loved it but decided on U of Maryland…

MyLb,

Would you be able to use the e-transcript option in Docufide.com? I think that you can find the link from your son’s high school website (likely under guidance counselor). My son used this link.

https://securetranscript.docufide.com/admin?rhid=01451

It notifies the counselor to send the necessary info electronically. We have received confirmation from Docufide. However, we have not noticed any status updates on the on-line application.

Wow–that’s all good news! My oldest didn’t have any apps this easy, but really only applied to smaller schools.

ace–thanks for the link. I’ll check it out, although son’s high school uses Naviance and it all seems fairly automatic through there.

Wouldn’t it be great to have one under his belt in a few weeks!

I submitted my essay and a list of ECs via snail mail, along with my transcript and counselor info form. Essays, rec letters, etc are completely optional; people with good stats usually don’t even bother.

There was a short counselor form that was required of all applicants. It’s one page, very brief, and should be made available after you submit and pay the application fee online.

Well he pushed the button, so something’s begun. Did get the counselor form, although school starts late for him this year–not til after Labor Day. Not sure when he’ll be getting teacher recs, but I guess he could snail mail them later if he hasn’t gotten a decision by the time they’re ready.

Just to rehash this…here is an issue that happened to my D last year, I’d hate to see it happen to you since you’re working with the online options.

IF he’s asked to fill out the additional application for Honors/scholarship consideration (this will be based on his stats)…there WILL be teacher recs for that. They want them online. They give VERY little time! And that timeline is based on when they accept you. So…let’s say they give 30 days from acceptance. GET RIGHT ON IT! My daughter didn’t get the rec requests to her teachers right away, knowing she had 30 days she didn’t even read the requirements for a couple of calendar weeks. At that point, we had 2 weeks AND were up against the Thanksgiving Holiday. She sent them to her teachers (online recs requested), and thought they were done. Had no CLUE they didn’t do them in time. Got an e-mail from a very apologetic teacher saying she hadn’t had time, and the other teacher said they never even got the electronic request. So…I BEGGED IU. Fortunately, they knew this was an issue and gave a bit of extra time THIS time. Maybe they’ve changed their rules this year, dunno.

Anyway - to everyone who gets the additional scholarship application this year: Open it, read the rules, get right on it, and FOLLOW UP. You will NOT be prompted at this step if your recs aren’t received in time. It’s up to you to make sure.

A tiny glitch that wasn’t my daughter’s error nearly cost us about $56,000 total.

Luck to all.

^^^great advice.

Indeed! Very glad to have found this forum with all the excellent advice.

Thanks, R124. We’ll certainly keep our eyes open. I believe my son will ask for recommendations soon, so I’m hoping they’ll be available within a few weeks to be sent to all schools he’ll be applying to.
