Can this be possible?

YES! and its true

but since youre going to be writing essays for other colleges your applying two it doesnt hurt to send one in. i sent in an essay and two recs with my app and got in in december.

readytoroll–I don’t recall your student’s stats, but if he/she is applying early it will be fine not to do the optional essay. If it’s a borderline match, go ahead and send one in.

Yes, but once you get into IU, and if you have good enough stats… they give you a packet of application for scholarships that require numerous essays and recs.

Looking at the online application, there doesn’t even seem to be an option to send an essay in, nor recommendations.

The activities section is a mess to fill in as well. You can choose “athletics” but can’t specify what type unless you choose “other”. And you an choose “other” for activity types but are not allowed to fill in the position you held…if it’s not there, you have to just select “other” again. I’m supposing that this school just looks at the grades and the test scores, and that’s it?

My daughter just submitted her application in and, as RTR mentioned, there is no section available for an optional essay. Based upon the app, IU’s admissions process does appear to be relatively numbers-driven.

if you have good stats they will admit you but then send a hutton honors college application and selective scholarship application that requires 3 essays and 2 recommendations

My D sent an essay and reccos with her application last fall. After she was admitted in November and given the oppotunity to compete for further scholarships ,she regretted sending the recomendations and essays when they were not intially required. She then had to write new essays and get further recommendtions. So, as J7odc3 points out I would save the essays and recommendations for the selective scholarship process and Hutton if you have good stats. I would only send the essay and recos if you think IU is a reach.

A little clarification on the Hutton scholarships as well, you don’t even have to necessarily write those essays unless you want to try for the scholarships. You can just email the Hutton director and she gives you the Honors packet, no writing or recommending needed.

You only need test scores and a HS transcript if you have fewer than 26 credits completed. That means you ONLY need to send in a college transcript, right?

Just completed our D’s app for IU, too easy, makes us think something is missing but apparently after checking all is correct. The EC’s section is not very well set up, the ones that count were able to be properly entered. Drum Major in marching band, president of Latin Club, confusing. D really wants to go to IU, my thought is that they might have info on contacts made, school visits as well.

Well, things are different at schools with a student body of 39,000, and where 80% of students are undergraduate (IU-B) than they are at a school such as Emory (where they enroll 13,000 and about 25% of those are graduate students.)

Definitely the easiest college application ever. But if you’re good enough to get invited to Hutton you’ll for sure want to keep those essays around to submit as your responses to the essay questions.
