Am I overreacting?

I think you are expecting too much of your parents. I am unsure what you expect them to do to help you? There is nothing they can reasonably do to get you in.

Honestly and I am saying this with honest concern, not just a snarky remark…but is it possible that you think you can’t get in to an Ivy and you are trying to find a reason to blame it on, other than yourself, so you have an excuse now?

It is ok to not get in to an Ivy. But if you do not get in, it is on you…your grades, your essays, your volunteer work, your extracurriculars, your essay, etc.

OP:

Your parents are teaching you some very valuable lessons right now, whether its intentional or not I don’t know. I am recent grad (2 years post MS) and I saw what happens to people who’s parents help them by doing too much for them. I knew a lot of people who’s parents paid for everything and took care of everything for them, and they didn’t turn out to be very ambitious or succesful adults post-college.

If you want something, it is your reponsibility (and only yours) to figure out how to achieve it i.e. the Yale admission.

Their hesitance to discuss finances, Lesson: everything costs money and you need to figure out how to pay for it or find a better alternative, if you are applying to multiple schools you must apply to every applicable scholarship to finance it. Your parents don’t owe you college tuition/study abroads etc.

They are treating your sister differently, Lesson: there will always be someone who has it easier than you. You have to be your own advocate and pursue what you want wether some other person approves or not. This becomes even more apparent in the workplace.

I know it seems unfair to you right now, but when you are finished with your degree and look back, you will see that you learned these lessons early on and succeeded. You will also see people who’s parents coddled them, and they tend have to learn those lessons after college. Best of luck!

^Thank you guys! Everyone’s advice and information helped me understand things a little bit better. Meh, I’m doing okay in school, so I guess I won’t complain xD
