Am I reaching too high with these schools and my stats? Will gladly chance you back.

GPA: 3.4 weighted (upward trend)
SAT: 2020 first time. 690 W/690 CR/640 M/10 essay
ACT: 29 superscored
AP/Honors: 2 honors classes, 1 college dual enrollment class, 8 AP's throughout high school career with 5 my senior year and 2 4's and 1 5 on three tests taken.
Teacher/counselor recs: Excellent and personal
Essays: Writing is my greatest strength and they are highly personal and well thought out
EC's: This is where I shine, guys...

-Editor-in-chief of newspaper
-Co-captain of debate team, state qualifier 2/2 years
-Founding member of National Art Honor Society
-Peer mentor and tutor (lots of community service hours)
-Organized hygiene drive in my community for battered women's shelter
-Shadowing and canvassing for a Colorado senator whose emphasis in legislature is around public health and healthcare in general
-Volunteer for Project CURE, an organization who donates medical supplies to countries in need
-Internship with top Denver photographer
-Work approximately 15 hours a week as a waitress

Yeah. I think that's everything.

My GPA is really what screwed me up. If you look at my individual grades, they are good, but a 2.28 first semester of 9th grade really brought me down. I got a 3.875 the semester following... I've had some pretty serious health issues that are explained in my recs.

I'm applying to NYU EDII Steinhardt, Boston University, University of Vermont, Tulane, U Washington - Seattle, and CU Boulder (safety, state school and financial safety) for SURE.

I am maybe applying to Syracuse, McGill, U Toronto, and Northeastern, but I am not quite sure yet.

Anyways, NYU & Tulane are my top choices even though NYU is technically tippy top since I'm applying EDII. UVM and CU are basically safeties. As for the rest, am I reaching too high? I'd like to have more options in terms of out of state, good schools that have the potential for merit and non need based aid. Suggestions please for matches and low reaches.

Thanks in advance! Will chance you back.

dang. i thought my EC’s were good. you’re are amazing… hopefully they weigh EC’s and scores more? go for the hollistic schools!

137 views and one reply, come on guys that is so lame.

Average chances

Thanks for your in-depth analysis.

I rarely do these chances things because the people answering - like me - aren’t admissions folks so we really don’t know, but . . . nice set of schools!!!

NYU EDII Steinhardt - a stretchbut your ECs and grade direction might work
Boston University - a stretch
University of Vermont - in
Tulane -a stretch but your ECs and grade direction will get you in
U Washington Seattle - in because OOS
CU Boulder - in because in-state

These are almost all bigger schools so I guess that you are not interested in the kind of LACs in books like Colleges That Change Lives (e.g., College of Wooster in OH)

McGill might be a stretch (gets a lot of interest since it’s ~$27K all in). U Pitt might be interesting for merit possibilities (18% of kids get an average of ~$14k in non-need-based aid) . . . there are also a load of smaller LACs in PA that might want to send some $ your way to attract you from “way out west” (e.g., Franklin and Marshall with 39% getting ~$12k , Gettysburg with 30% getting $10k.)

Good luck!!

what is your unweighted GPA?

My UW GPA is about a 3.3.

My GPA’s for all semesters are as follows…

9th: 2.28/3.875
10th: 3.57/3.75
11th: 3.57/3.23
12th: 4.3/???

All weighted. My course rigor has also been at the most difficult level, and my highschool is top ranked.

I am mostly looking at bigger schools with large research endowments because that’s something I want to involve myself in as an undergrad. But if an LAC has ample opportunities for study abroad and research then I’m all up for looking into them. However I am actively against living in the midwest.

Those schools that you mentioned in PA I will definitely look into. Thanks for your advice!

I really don’t think you are reaching too high…
your GPA shows an upward trend so I think you’re good
SATs are in a good range
Essays, Recs, and ECs will push you over to an acceptance if you’re ever on the edge

No, you’re not reaching too high. Don’t worry, just sit back and wait for the admissions committees to reply. What all of us have to say about your admission is essentially useless.

Thanks for the input. Chance threads are definitely useless, it’s just good to have some perspective. I would hate to put myself in a position where the only schools I applied to were out of my range. Different people have read/observed/personally experienced different situations. I want to have some options!

Can’t wait until this is all over and I have some decisions…

The extra curricular activities will definitely help mask the low GPA esp if you elaborate on them in your essays.
You have a decent chance at NYU and Tulane, I believe.
Solid courses.
SATs are also a little low… but you should have a good chance at BU too.
I’m not sure about any of the other schools.

Chance me back please :)

2020 is a bit low?! Really? Never woulda guessed. I was under the impression that that’s in the middle range for NYU, maybe even the 60th percentile.

Your GPA is a little low but you have a decent reason for it, and I’m sure admission officers would understand (and of course, the upward trend definitely helps). I think your SAT scores are perfectly fine, and your ECs are very good, so you have pretty good chances at getting in.
