Im a sophomore and for my first semester, I took Honors Chemistry and got a D/D+ as a final grade..
I knew this was pretty bad so I switched to regular chemistry and I think I have an A/A+ right now.
Am I still eligible to a UC? I really want to go to a UC or a California State university :(
Would the colleges forgive my D if I maintain an A+ in regular chemistry? Thanks
How should I make up for my D

Maybe make up the D in summer school and I don’t know if your school does this but ours has a system on if you pass the second semester, it’ll repair your fail for the first because it shows that you qualify and have learned all the necessary material for that course. If I were you, I would just check on what works best with how your school’s system is structured.

Here is the UC website.

Not sure what you mean by “still eligible”. Seems to me you are not REALLY eligible until you have a UC GPA, and the A-G requirements. That’s end of junior year, although you surely don’t want to wait until then to think about it. Eligibility in the state wide context is just not “over” for most, until junior year is over.

VERY smart to stay on top of the CSU’s using the csumentor website as well.

@Shrinkrap
I’m thinking about taking
4 years of English
3.5 years of History ( Taking US history over the summer)
4 years of Science ( Completed:Biology) (Currently:Chemistry) Junior year:Physics) Senior: ->(AP Physics/Anatomy?)
4 years of math ( Completed: 8th Alg1, 9th Geometry) ; Currently taking: Algebra2Trig
3 years of Foreign Language
If I were to pass all of my classes for the rest of my high school career (exception of the first semester D), Would I be accepted if I were to apply to a CSU/UC.

“Would I be accepted if I were to apply to a CSU/UC.”

So you are asking about maybe 30 + schools based on an “if I pass”? I suggest you follow the California schools and UC forums for a bit.

But also enjoy the journey. I haven’t been a teenager for like forever. Even my KIDS are well ensconced in their 20’s.

Okay, son JUST turned 21.

It’s been a stressful journey hah, Thanks! :)

"What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! "

That’s a quote, not a recommendation. Blah blah blah disclaimer.

http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/csu-uc-a-gcomparisonmatrix.pdf indicates that a C or better in second semester chemistry will validate first semester chemistry for CSU but not UC, for the purpose of fulfilling the a-g subject requirements. But if you have taken biology and will take physics, you will fulfill the science part of the subject requirements anyway, assuming C or higher grades.

However, the D still counts in your GPA unless the course is repeated.

You need to take the D over – THE SAME COURSE not a lesser version of the course, or it won’t wipe out the same grade. There are UC approved online courses, but you have to make sure to take the same course. Last I saw, Brigham Young online was UC approved, but double check.

@ucbalumnus , Thank you for the information! Would it do anything if I were to take a semester of chemistry over the summer?

@collegevetting I have to take the same honors chemistry course? That’s a shame, I really struggled in that class. I didn’t want to risk getting a D again because I knew 2nd semester would get even more hard so I figured if I switch to regular Chemistry and just ace that subject, i would be better off making up one semester rather than both.

collegevetting, a few years ago Brigham Young’s courses weren’t approved for UCs. Maybe they changed. I guess it was about 5 years ago that we inquired for my son.

OP, you won’t need to take it over again to meet the a-g requirements. The only reason to take it over again would be to increase the GPA. Talk to your GC to decide if the effort is worth it.

Last I checked they were. My son took one a couple of years back. And dianasawr, I don’t mean you have to take the class from the same teacher or at your school, the textbook may not even be the same. I do know you have to replace an AP course with an AP course. Honors, I’m not so sure. Ask your counselor.

It looks like the online approved provider requirements are changing this year, so I would definitely ask your counselor for help with this, if you don’t want to take the course there in summer school (and sometimes it is easier to learn from a different approach.) http://www.ucop.edu/agguide/online-learning/policy-changes/index.html

It looks like they are making all the ‘online providers’ recertify under new standards. The inner links in the links I posted should EVENTUALLY lead you to those that are certified, but your counselor really should help you with this. Just tell him or her that you want to get the D off your record for UC and CSU purposes.

Is it ever possible for my D to be removed from my transcript though? I know towards the beginning of the school year, there would be an assembly where all of our counselors talked about how there’s no way to remove a D. The best you can do is to retake the class over the summer to show that you care but that’s it really. I’m just hoping my road to a CSU/UC isn’t over. I’m going to talk to counselor soon about my situation though

A D doesn’t get removed and when you apply to the UCs you SELF REPORT that D then also self report the class you took over and THEY drop the D. Even if it were dropped from your transcript you would be asked to self report, so I don’t see that it would do you any good.

@Collegevetting ooooh, so for the class to take over, does it have to be a honors class or is my chemistry class right now ok?

@dianasawr you really need to ask your counselor. If it was not a ‘UC accredited honors’ to begin with (and those are specific listed honors classes specifically approved by the UC system) MAYBE it is seen as ‘the same as a non honors class’ by the UC system, but I sure wouldn’t want to say so then have it turn out to be otherwise.

Good luck!

My daughter got a D in Algebra 1 in 8th grade (which counted for CSU), didn’t repeat the class, and got accepted at all 5 CSUs that she applied to. However, her ACT score was 30. The CSUs only count the sophomore and junior a-g courses, combined with the SAT or ACT score. OOS students have a higher score to achieve to get accepted. UCs will be much harder to get into in your case, also because the OOS student minimum is much higher than in state.
