I didn’t get to take the AMC 10 this year due to other commitments, but from what I heard it was a LOT harder last year’s test, and last year’s was presumably a harder one as well. I’ve heard the same about AMC 12.
Both the 10/12 were a bit stranger than usual in my opinion, but very very average in difficulty. Expect either a 120/100 or 115+/95+ cutoff. I personally know a lot of people with a 94.5 though, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
When will the cutoff be released?
Anyone know when will the AMC12A results be released? According to the answers on AoPS, I got a 103.5 hope I may get into AIME. This year is actually my first time getting in (and I’m already a junior), hopefully, anyone has advice for me on AIME preparation? I’d really (or figuratively if u like) appreciate it!!!
@BHan98 if you got a 103.5 on the AMC 12A, then you definitely made AIME. The maximum possible cutoff score for AMC 12 is 100.
@imbep49 Thank you! I simply hope that the answers on AoPS were accurate.
@BHan98 I got into AIME for the first time as a junior too. Just keep solving past AIME questions to get a feel of what the questions are like and how to tackle them. I didn’t do so well on the past problems, but somehow I did quite decently during the real thing - could be because I was used to the format.
Did others find the 10A hard this year? Son qualified for AIME last year on the 10A but really did poorly this year (78) on it as is disappointed. He is able to take the 10B this week so hopefully can qualify. Seems as if he is rushing in the early questions so he has more time later on the more difficult ones but making careless errors…having enough time is a big issue for him.
When/where are cutoff scores released?
@cheescake the MAA AMC Statistics (just search AMC statistics) page is where they post the scores. I’m guessing the 12A cutoff will be released soon, in the next week or so. Today the page seems to keep crashing on my computer and I can’t access it. I hope this is a good sign that they’re updating the page right now.
Sigh okay thanks @imbep49 I’m pretty sure I failed the B so the A is my only hope…
Stats for the AMC 12A should be released next week (I remember it was around that time when the 2015 stats came out). The B tests were mad early this year, and I thought the B test was easier, though I still screwed up.
Ugh I don’t know why but I thought the B was waaay harder…I guess I’m just weird. What are the chances that the cutoff for the A will be 96 or lower? That’s what I’m praying for…
From the AoPS website:
I remember in China they had like 1 school with 20 150’s.
@cheescake I agree, I thought the B was substantially harder. Some of the early problems on the B were tedious and easy to mess up on. I think they were both harder than last year though, I’m expecting cutoff slightly under 100. What do you guys think?
Someone got emails from MAA and said the line for 12A was 92, 10A 110. I am not sure if these numbers are real. Does MAA actually reply to individual emails? When I called today, they only told me the cutoff would be released in a week.
@kli586 those scores are not possible (they must be multiples of 1.5), it’s just a rumor. Hopefully cutoffs will be announced next week!
Actually, those numbers that kli586 posted are most likely correct. If you go on the aops community you will see teachers have already received emails with those cutoff scores. The cutoff score does not need to be possible. For example, 100 and 120 are both impossible scores to get.
This is dangerous…I’m starting to get my hopes up
