Which is the better APUSH textbook?

my class is using the pageant and all i can say is DENSE...if is so filled with information on every page and descriptions...it cover EVERYTHING...im pretty sure that the other textbook covers everything as well because it also is popular (even though not as popular as the pageant)....i suggest pageant because i know it is good...idk of the other one too well

american history a survey has more primary sources interwoven about some a page. while pageant authors focuses a lot on making you laugh or making the materials enjoyable

we're using american pageant and its good

I used A Survey and man was it great. Makes US History even more interesting than it already is.

Yea, we're using American Pageant too, and its really good.

I am in AP U.S. history at my school and we use American History: A Survey, whereas honors uses American Pagent.

Yea we're using american pageant too!!!

American Pageant was pretty amazing, used it for three years in a row b/c the damn book has so much information. Also, a good book is I believe The great american fact-finder, perfect for those last few study groups.

I thought the entertaining bits were helpful for American Pageant because, well, I'm a bit of a dork and I thought some of the phrases they gave were hilarious and history before the New Deal bores me unless it's approached in an interesting way. My classmates did not care for the book all that much, however. I'm not sure if they were fans of some of the wording and extra details our book gave (such as the heights of the presidents, especially the early ones).

Yea I heard American Pageant is the most popular college textbook, and my school uses it too so it must be good. It also has a good sense of humor to it.

I really dont see how the American Pageant is "humorous," but I do agree that it is a good textbook.

We used Pageant last year and it worked out pretty well for me.

The only thing I'd say to be careful of with it if you read each chapter carefully, but don't get every single word down, a lot of times what happens is the beginning of a paragraph will mention an important reason for something (just an example) and then by the end of the paragraph of page there will be one sentence saying that something else was the MAIN cause or main significance of something. Sooo when it comes time to take a quiz or something, I'd be sitting there going, okay, I know both are true, I read both sentences... and couldn't remember word for word what the book said b/c it often phrases things like that. Just one opinion, though...

Otherwise, I loved the book. Jozine, I agree, I liked the little tidbits to keep me going.

I liked american pageant--some of the president-stuff chapters are sooo boring, but the culture chapters totally make up for it, they are really great :D And it puts a lot of interesting quotes and pictures in there. One of my favorites quotes is put in there: "Why is television called a medium? Because it is never rare or well-done." XDDD
I read the American Pageant and took notes on it at about a chapter every 2 school days, and listened to in-class lectures, and that was all I did to prepare for the test (never reviewed it, studied before the test, or anything like that) and I got a 4 (and that without managing to have time to finish a single essay! -laugh-). Not amazing for this forum, I know, but still, shows the book is good! :D I've heard it's biased, which may be true, but.. pfft, all history is somewhat biased. I don't think the bias ever got in my way on the test or anything o.O

We use/used American History: A Survey.

lol back in my sopho year in high school, we used the american pageant. Gotta love the random references like people thinking cars were whorehouses on wheels. My apush teacher made the joke about not reading after 7 pm cuz the book will put you to sleep! :P

The American Pageant was written more in a literary format versus an historical retelling per se, which explains why my entire AP US class HATED it. I despised it as well.

We're using American Pageant this year, and so far I HATE it. I mean, sure, all textbooks are biased, but this one seems much more so than is necessary. I also had a textbook I REALLY liked last year for AP Euro, so I have somewhat high expectations. I guess it's mostly personal preference though, if you can't get through a textbook without the more literary/humorous elements it should be a good one for you. Of course, this is combined with an AP US teacher who I also really don't like, so I may be harping too much on the textbook as the source of my problem.

American Pageant wasn't a great history book and I hardly paid attention to some of the information that was presented in each chapter. The problems that I had with the textbook was the way in which it jumps around too much: other than that, its a great way to study an administration's domestic/foreign policies. I didn't really use it for the AP Exam at all: In fact I relied heavily on the class-required out-of-class reading. I made frequent trips to the library and basically did research every weekend, exploring every event's impact which allowed me to pose provoking questions in class. The authors (whether it was required reading or not) interested me with their heavy details on the social/political analyses--I was able to absorb much of their commentary/influence and adopted it into my own in my essays. I scored a 4, not great, not bad, but it was still disappointing. What was funny is how the 2 out of the 6 people who had As in the class flopped with a 2

i used American HIsotry: A Survey last year, and loved it. plus i got a 5 on the AP w/ no prep besides the book, so i def. recommend it.
