I found out last night when they sent me like four emails telling me about accepted student events around where I live.
Decision: Accepted (I am away from home and the letter might be there but I don’t know if I received a scholarship yet)
Major: Political Science
ACT: 29
GPA: UW 3.2 and W 4.1
ECs: A ton. Really good ECs.
Essays: My AU essay was good but my common app was really good. didn’t write a why american essay.
Rigor: Full IB student at elite private school in NY
Finally heard. My daughter was waitlisted. AU was not a big contender for her, but it’s always a ding to the ego to not be accepted, esp since she got into Northeastern. So, here are the basic stats, FWIW:
I can’t speak specifically to American’s policy, however if the other school(s) has similar acceptance stats and similar GPA/SAT requirements, I feel that there’s nothing to lose. The worst that can happen is that they say no.
Convey how grateful you are, thank them for their generous offer, but then nicely explain that your student has received other offers with higher merit awards that compel you to seriously consider them, pointing out that their school is your student’s top choice. We did that with our oldest successfully.
@familyfromLI - it was in the letter, kind of in the middle of the page. My kid didn’t even notice it, I had to read closely to find it.
regarding negotiating aid, it’s always worth it to try but American doesn’t have the kind of endowment that a lot of schools do to try to bump it up. With another kid we had luck at two schools, an apologetic no from one and an absolutely no way in hell from another.
Yup, it’s true there’s no guarantees - but I’m from the school of thought that if you don’t try you’ll never know! It’s not like they’ll take their acceptance back for trying! I particularly like your “no way in hell” LOL!
I’ll have to scrutinize the letter myself I guess. I just got the verbal summary
@NJMom18 - ok now I’m really confused. I thought he should be getting more merit but couldn’t remember why. That extra $30k is game changer. Guess I’ll make a call on Monday morning.
@NJMom18 - I wonder if the eliminated that for kids applying for 2019-2020. That Good to Know book was published in 2017. Can’t find that same info anywhere online now. What a bummer.
Got waitlisted…I applied to the honors program as well so I assume I’m no longer eligible for this year…submitted the required Google form to accept my spot with a passionate essay answering “Why I want to be at American this fall”.
Here are my stats
ACT:31
GPA: 3.97 (unweighted) 4.13 (weighted)
AP: 11 AP classes over 3 years
EC: realllly freakin good. Secretary then President of my school’s community service club, founder and president of Model UN club, varsity soccer, 300+ volunteer hours…ect.
Any input or thoughts on if I should get off the waitlist ? It was one of my top schools.
We are also in NorCal and my son received an email about admit student event but nothing about NorCal event and no admit letter as of yet. Please let us know a little more about the invite to a NorCal event, hope we can join.
