American with Canadian Citizenship, Wondering my chances of getting into Trinity College at U of T

Hello beautiful people,

I am a high school senior from North Carolina who is currently attending the number 1 public high school in the state
As for my grades, I have a 4.95 W GPA and a 3.75 UW GPA. (Caucasian Male) (Canadian Dad, American Mom)

I know that in Canada it is based on percentages, so for reference, I’m hovering around a 90.5 average for high school.
Additionally, I have a 1500 SAT, 780 math 720 reading, and a 33 Act, perfect science sub-score and an 11 on the additional writing. The Act isn’t important because they don’t use it in Canada, so refer to my SAT.

As extracurriculars in Canada aren’t that big of a deal, i’ll just mention the big ones: V football (1year) and V tennis (2 JV, 2V) and a summer job for all of high school.

Obviously, I applied to the faculty of arts and sciences, as I am applying to Trinity. I think my writing supplements were strong and well thought out. I would appreciate people’s inputs as to not only my chances but what they think about the university.

P.S. I applied for a microbiology and molecular genetics major (I have taken 4 years of biomedical sciences, honors biology, AP biology, honors biology lab, and honors chemistry.) Right now, the university is my #1 choice

You should be fine for acceptance to U of T. Admissions to Trinity depends very much on those supplemental essays. The acceptance rate for Trinity is about 10%. You have a very good chance for Trinity though. You might find out by early February, but most acceptances go out mid-March.

Thank you. I am crossing my fingers that I get into trinity. Where did you find that Trinity acceptance rate was that low. I am curious because it is so hard to find admission statistics when it comes to Canadian Universities

Email from Trinity admissions. I’m an alum.

Quick question: I applied yesterday (I know, I’m freakishly late). Are these writing supplements on the applicant portal that we gain access to later? Also, if I don’t gain admittance to Trinity, will I be considered for the other colleges?

The Trinity supplement is sent later and is separate from joinID. If you are not admitted to Trinity, you will be considered for New, University and St. Michael’s colleges in the order that you ranked them. You will not be considered for Victoria, Innis or Woodsworth.

How did you like it? Are you from Canada or the States. I know in Canada high school grade inflation is a big issue, so I usually don’t compare my averages to theirs

The Trinity app is due Thursday. I would get on it if I were you

I loved Trinity. I went to high school in Canada. I now live in the States.

Canadian high school grades are LOWER than comparable US grades. Canadian university grades are also lower than comparable US universities. I’ve taught in both countries.

Thats not true. Canadian university grades are lower. However, there are many articles speaking of the current grade inflation at ontario high schools. One article even noted the almost 60% of students in ontario have a 90 average or higher

@nickkraut Are you referring to this article? https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/education/high-school-grade-inflation-balloon-ready-to-pop/article10452197/ in which they say that over 60% of high school graduates have an A average? That’s not the same as a 90 average. In Ontario, 80 is an A. Universities in Canada are well aware of the difference in grading in US schools and US schools who get a significant number of Canadian applicants are aware of the difference in grading as well.

What is the real life experience for job search and graduate school applications for canadian university graduates since they have lower grades compared to their American peers? How badly does it impact them?

@nickkraut How did U of T application go? I got in Trinity for life sciences for class of 2022

@panda_juice I did not hear back. They cancelled my application and now I’m going through the appeals process.
