My son got an e-mail that said “late in the day on Friday, Dec. 14.” It did not give an exact time. We were hoping that late in the “day” meant daytime, not night, but it’s hard to know! We shall see soon.

Waiting for news tomorrow with fingers crossed. Hope it doesn’t arrive too late in the day. Does anyone know if there will be a hard copy letter sent as a follow uon to the web page news?

This morning the message on my Amherst acdata site changed from something along the lines of “We expect your letter to be ready late in the day on Dec. 14,2012. Please check back at that time” to “The designated date to view your letter has not yet arrived. I wonder why it changed. Did anyone else’s message change?” I also got the email mentioned before.

does anyone know when the decisions come out?

is anyone planning to play sports at amherst?

S accepted. He is very excited. As a parent I am excited but given the situation in CT the celebration will be very muted. We as parents worry that our kids will be “forced” to go to the number 8 school instead of the number 2 school. After watching the news regarding CT I am happy that I have a fantastic S who is going to any college. Congratulations to all students who applied. Everyone will end up at a great school, Amherst or somewhere else.

Congrats to your son GarnetTide.
Very well said as all of us regain perspective after today’s tragedy
As a parent of an Amherst student, feel free to PM if I can help with any questions

Accepted. I still can’t believe this!

It would give guidance to RD candidates if the accepted students can post their stats.

I’m so happy and the best of luck to all of you applying RD to Amherst!

Hello all, I’m applying RD to Amherst. I would say that my application is pretty competitive and my stats/ecs/recs/leadership are the same as well. But, I feel that my supplement essay is outstanding.

For those that applied early, can you lend some advice as to how important you think a good essay is for admission?

I’m not certain, but I did read on Amherst’s website that the #1 most important thing to them is transcript and rigor of course work, followed second by standardized test scores. They next mentioned recommendations and essays and then EC’s, and the site said something to the effect of this: that these (recs, essays, EC’s) tell them more about you as an applicant and can be the tipping point between two equally gifted (ie in grades/test scores) applicants). So in short, it is important, but not the MOST important factor.

deferred! <kinda happy about that, since i was p sure that they were gonna toss my application into the trash can.

i’m def not as impressive as some of yall bros/babes here but whatevs this is only for future reference so underclassmen creepin on this thread won’t screw up at school like i did :)

2260 on sat one sitting, 33 on act one sitting (didn’t send because they didn’t waive the fees wahh), gpa is 3.878, rank is top 5% in a pretty competitive public school, 6 aps so far (5 5s and one 3) and taking all ap classes this yr (which is only like 5 since my school operates on a block schedule). all the other classes were honors.
i think teacher recs were good…? idk i love them and they should (probs) love me back.
counselor rec was probs generic since she has to take care of like 400 seniors.
i liked my commonapp essay but my amherst essay was pretty bad, i think.
i didn’t have any ecs freshman year since my family didn’t have a car. i didn’t specify that on my app though, since i didn’t know where to put it.
after that i got into debate, young democrats (president this yr holla @ me fellow hippie liberals), dabbled in a lot of volunteer work (held leadership positions), a bit of student government, generic stuff. i don’t have any awards but i was selected as a finalist to my state’s governor’s school, which i didn’t go because i got into telluride association summer program<3 (holla @ me taspers creepin on this thread).
also i’m a pending permanent resident so i’m considered international if that helps. idk why people are specifying their race but i’m asian. i’m also a questbridge finalist but didn’t participate in college match, just applied under ed to amherst (obvs).
why i think i didn’t get in: uh reading the stats of those got in, probably everything lol. also amherst called my counselor to “verify something” (in her words), so they probably thought my app was weird, i guess. my grades this semester were also pretty bad because i’m going through some family/mental health issues but i didn’t let my counselor know/specify that on my app.

congratulations to all that got in! y’all are fantastic people! :)

[]Teacher Recs: One of my teachers loves me, though I didn’t actually see his rec. The other teacher gets along well with me, so his rec (which I saw) was pretty normal-level.
[]Counselor Rec: Didn’t see them. Probably not that good, since 200 seniors in my school get recs from the counselors every year.

[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Nothing. Seriously.

[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I am absolutely relieved about my acceptance. I hate writing college essays. As for advice… get good grades. There was nothing particularly amazing about any part of my application, but good standardized test scores help. Not inspiring advice, but there you go.
