Amherst College Class of 2017 Official Thread

I want to wish a super-dooper-whooper crazy congratulations to all those who were accepted early decision!!! I encourage anyone who had the bad luck to be deferred to keep their heads up, as I wish you the best during the regular decision round!

Peace & Love

Accepted

Stats:[ul]

[]SAT: 2240, from 3 sittings. 800 CR, 780 W, 660 M. (All within Amherst’s 50% range, but Math was juuuuuust barely.)
[]SAT II: 750 English, 650 US History
[]ACT: Never took it!
[]GPA: High school doesn’t do GPA’s and I’ve never bothered calculating.
[]Rank: In the top 10-15% I’d say?
[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): Nope!
[/ul]Subjective[ul]

[]Essays: OK, I think I did a solid job on my Common App (got across who I was, created an interesting situation, had fun with my essay and intensively workshopped it with teachers) but I know I killed it on the Amherst supplement. I was VERY happy with how that essay turned out. Basically, I had fun with the prompt, wrote from the heart, and didn’t try to make it more “normal.” Moral of the story? Bet on adcoms willingness to laugh!
[]Teacher Recs: STELLAR. Have taken multiple classes with both teachers and one specifically said I was one of the best recs she’d ever written. Certain that both were stand outs.
[]Counselor Rec: Very, very good.
[]Supplementary Material: Thought about it, then decided against it! Why bother submitting writing. If you’re a talented writer, the Common App and Amherst supplement should allow you to showcase your skills.
[li]Hook: URM, had a VERY clear, defined interest in a certain subject and had done a lot to back up that interest.[/li][/ul]Personal[ul]

[]Location: Northeast, near New England
[]High School Type: Independent, progressive
[]Ethnicity: AA, parents immigrants from Africa
[]Gender: Female
[/ul]Other[ul]

[]Extracurriculars: All the regular ones, Debate Club, service, blah blah blah. You guys know the deal. Heavy emphasis on writing, lots of summer writing workshops and leadership positions in newspaper, lit mag, etc.
[]Awards: Progressive independent school, doesn’t do awards
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: It’s Amherst! Everything is a crapshoot. If I have any advice, it’s to enjoy yourself in your app, have fun, and show them why you’d be invaluable to their student body. DON’T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY!! Throughout high school, I pursued stuff I was passionate about and gave my due diligence to subjects I was not particularly interested in. I think this showed in my application. College is what you make of it. If I didn’t get into Amherst, I would’ve applied to Vassar, Brown, Oberlin, Emory, Grinnell, Pomona and my state school. I would’ve been happy at ANY of them! Don’t let the college process run your life. And good luck applying![/ul]

My daughter was ACCCEPTED! What a relief. Congrats to all.

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[ /list] My application process was a bit different being a Questbridge applicant and all, but I’d say to be true and honest in your essays, but don’t go overboard. Also, send as much stuff to Amherst as possible. Extra letters of rec, resumes, everything. Make sure that they have the best picture of you as possible. One more thing is that you should make sure that you know all of the flaws that will appear in your application like dips in grades, then make sure that you have something good that counteracts that flaw. Oh! And don’t worry about financial aid once you get in. It’s fantastic! Good Luck Everyone!

I went to DivOH too!!

I was accepted Early Decision. I’m curious about what the next step in the process is. I sent in my enrollment deposit and got my actual letter in the mail. What do we do next?

For some reason my AC data now says “The designated date to view your letter has not yet arrived. Please check back later.” hmm I hope it’s fixed soon.

I hope the change is due to my submission of the Enrollment Form.

accepted! will be running cross country and track for Amherst college. can’t wait to meet you all

Does it say “Downloaded” for anyone’s common app portion? Mine doesn’t for Amherst, but does for other schools. I’m worried. :S

ED applicants, have you received any packet/letter in the mail from Amherst yet? Are they supposed to send something in the mail after they receive the enrollment confirmation form? What does your AC data say under admission status?

My son was admitte ED and we did receive a letter from Amherst via snail mail saying that he was accepted. If I recall, it was identical to the letter that we found on the AC Data site on 12/15 (and printed off at that time). Now we can no longer access that letter on the AC Data site. I think it says something like “the designated date to view your letter has not yet arrived”, like it said in early December. Of course, that makes no sense since the “designated date”, ie 12/15, has past. Also, I e-mailed to check that they received our $400 deposit and the signed enrollment form; we had sent that off on 12/16 and had not heard back. Likely the delay was due to the holidays and the fact that their Admissions Office is closed until 1/13. However, today we got a very nice e-mail back from Admissions saying that they did indeed receive our deposit and my son’s signed enrollment form and that we would be receiving a written acknowledgement via snail mail soon. Hope this helps!

Definitely helps. Thank you! My ACData says the same. I am pretty sure they took down the initial letter because the enrollment form was submitted. Will be waiting for mail.

I also have not recieved any other material except for the acceptance letter via snail mail and my financial information. I also returned my agreement form and deposit. My AC Data has also changed to the standard message that jennieling posted. My guess is that we will hear again from Amherst during the spring, once the RD applicants have been accepted - that way they can send out all of the housing info, etc. to everyone at once.

My son got a written acknowlegement of his deposit and agreement form today via snail mail. It said that they would send addtl info in April, so I’m thinking we likely won’t hear anything else until April.

We experienced the same as the previous posts. I had sent the deposit certified and hadn’t received the return receipt back yet so I was concerned as well. Emailed Admissions and received an email back with confirmation today.

Has anyone here had any experience with Noncustodial Parent Waiver Petition? How likely is the college to accept the petition?

zolo, Amherst was very accepting with my petition 5 years ago for my daughter, but I assume it would be based on individual circumstances. Feel free to PM me.

That’s great. I submitted the form, but the status on ‘fadata’ is still ‘not received,’ even though other documents from the same mailing appear received. I hope it’s not going to take much longer for them to make the decision.

Does anybody know when decisions will be out?
