Amherst College Class of 2022!

@junior1818@equality4all :-SS

Thank you @OuchThatHurt ! And that’s awesome!

@kacombs Have you applied via QuestBridge?

@BowieRules Nope- I unfortunately didn’t even find out about Questbridge until it was too late to apply!

@kacombs My D was admitted via QuestBridge, she got VERY generous financial aid too, and first college to offer to pay for travel to Overnight Open House. Are you going? Have you received financial aid package?

@BowieRules I have not yet received my financial aid information, but I was offered travel funding for the overnight open house as well!

Lol nope I didn’t, became too depressed and just totally forgot about CC. Thanks guys for the fun in the time being tho.

@equality4all All Hi, I am parent who read this thread from outside. Just created an account today to wish some kids good luck! I have particularly been worried about you. Hope that you read your acceptance and moved past it in - whatever the result was. Remember that a college is just as good as it’s students. You will shine where-ever you go!

My D got in Waitlist with Biology major. does anyone have a stat for getting off from Waitlist?

@Sangkook, I don’t want to disappoint you, at the top selective schools, the chances of getting into from waitlist is almost close to zero! They already admitted 300+ students more than the class size for the freshman year, 450. Because, from their experience of doing this year over year, they have a pretty good idea how many from total admitted will eventually accept and attend Amherst. Same is true for all the top selective colleges around the nation. Good luck anyway.

I was going over the financial aid package from Amherst last night with my D18. We were disappointed that their package is less than Williams and Pomona. I tried to talk to FinAid office, they told me unless my income from 2016 to 2017 has gone down, then they can reconsider it. But my income in fact went up as I changed my job. So, the prospect is even bleaker to get any further aid from them. It’s a mystery how with the exact same financial info, one college offers more or less aid than other similar ranking colleges! I wish all these colleges use a single calculative method of coming up with the aid number!

Due to the less aid package, our D18 is dropping Amherst from her list for final pick. Now it’s between Pomona vs. Williams for her.

Regarding the wait list, I checked the Amherst common data set (you can google it to find previous years’ admissions data) and 50 students were taken from the wait list last year so there is definitely a chance.

@sanjosedad It can feel frustrating that each school has its own method for determining aid, but that’s the nature of the beast (I have lived it, continue to live it, and will continue to live it for years to come  ) I am surprised the office said they would not reconsider your aid. Did you tell the financial aid officer about your child’s packages from Williams and Pomona? My oldest is a recent Amherst graduate who received a better package from another highly selective no-loan school when admitted to colleges; Amherst essentially matched the other school’s package when my child told them that after revisits, Amherst was the clear top choice (we provided Amherst with the FA documentation from the other school). Although I am not familiar with Pomona’s aid policies, I know Williams packages can include loans, and the loan amounts can go up a bit each year…not sure if that is applicable or matters to you.

Amherst’s financial aid office was very helpful and easy to communicate with over my child’s time there. It could be the case that Amherst has since changed the way they handle financial aid reconsideration, but I suggest that if Amherst is or becomes your child’s top choice, you should contact the office again. It can’t hurt. No matter what the outcome, your child has terrific options!

Accepted!
30 ACT, SAT Spanish (760), SAT US History (660)
Rank 10/~900

This is one of my top schools and I am shocked to receive acceptance!

@Indot93 Thank you for the Stat on Waitlist. MyDD got accepted from Bowdoin but Amherst is her top choice and it is much closer from home (live in CT). I was wondering how much difference btw Bowdoin and Amherst in Bio major.

@CollegeMomma1 Thanks for your reply posting. At this point, my D is dropping Amherst from her list. We are from Silicon Valley, SF Bay area. Pomona is close to us and logistically more convenient for all of us. My S went to east coast college few years back, graduated with CS degree and backed in bay area working for a software company. Logistically it wasn’t a pleasant 3 years that he took to complete his degree. Travel, storing stuff during summer break etc. were not pleasant and cheap either. Our D is 70% confirmed she be attending Pomona. She is already on their admitted student FB page, connecting with other admitted students. She still likes to check out Williams one last time when she attends Williams Preview days 3rd week of Apr.
Also, we look at the majors offered by Pomona, Williams and Amherst. Amherst is missing few interesting majors, viz. Cognitive Science, Linguistics, International Relations, Sociology, Molecular Bio, Environmental Science. Some of them are of interest to our D and she may choose one/two of them as her majors. Amherst mentioned that students can take classes from four other sister schools that they are associated with, but again it’s a matter of convenience; doing it from same college vs go to other colleges to take the classes.
Well, this is most likely my last posting on Amherst thread,as we are not considering it anymore. Best of luck to all class of 2022!

I’ll be attending Amherst in the fall! I hope I can go to the open house since they offered to cover the costs.

^You can thank the Nixon era antitrust suit brought against the Overlap Group (a subset of COFHE) which turned FA into an annual bidding war between the top need-based colleges and universities in the country. :frowning: If the Trump administration wants to cut regulations, they could start by tearing up that consent decree.

^Correction: The anti-trust consent decree on need-based FA actually had its genesis during the Reagan administration:

How many are stuck at the airport in Hartford after spending the weekend at Amherst College? D18 is trying to get home, but flight cancelled due to weather. Delta put her on the next flight out in the morning, but aren’t putting the kids up in a hotel :((
