[quote] University President gives accepted students a Penn Preview

By The Current Staff

High school students deliberating where they will spend their undergraduate years should look no further than Penn, said President Amy Gutmann on April 10.

You want to make a difference in the world, and we at Penn want to teach you how to do that, said Gutmann, who made a surprise appearance at a Penn Preview Day for accepted students and their families.

Gutmann was introduced by Dean of Admissions Eric J. Furdaand cheered on by the Penn Quaker mascotbefore speaking passionately to a packed Irvine Auditorium audience about the value of a University education. Penn is a special place, she told the crowd, because 12 different world-class schools sit in close proximity on a beautiful urban campus. Unique opportunities for undergraduate research and study abound, from labs to law school classrooms. All of Penn is open to you, Gutmann said.

The President also called the class of 2013, the best class ever at the University of Pennsylvania. Accepted students hail from all 50 states and 77 different countries.

Gutmann finished her talk by inviting studentsand their familiesto attend a fall open house at her home. [Penn] is, to me, heaven on earth, she said.

i just got back from Preview Day… to be honest, this lady did not give a very good speech. it was pretty corny and full of of forced cliches. you’d think a school president would be more articulate and skilled in giving speeches, but her rhetoric and public speaking definitely left something to be desired.

not that i think her speech made people change their minds about coming to Penn or anything… but if she was supposed to motivate us or whatever, she failed. lol.

either way, i thought today’s Preview Day was very informative and definitely made a strong pitch to the admitted students. the students panel was hilarious, haha.

She didn’t say anything too new or interesting, or anything of that much substance for that matter, but I practically squealed when she came out. She’s been like this distant celebrity during my application process and it was amazing to see her in person (wow, I am such a pre-freshman). Her energy was perfect and she seemed like an enjoyable personality.

And haha, I loved the student panel as well…

She made some weird comment about students visiting her in her house that got my parents all worried…LMAO. Yeah she was chill, but a little too “eh” for the nature of her administrative role.

Oh thanks for correcting that misconception…maybe her phrasing during the presentation was what threw my parents off (I wasn’t paying attention lol).

I think people are too harsh on her public speaking skills. Maybe she is a little awkward, but she always speaks clear, loud, and with energy. A lot of university presidents are much more boring.

yeah, i wasn’t expecting her, so i wasn’t expecting a great profound speech. she made it fun and personally i think she made the atmosphere a bit less tense! like penn is prestigious, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun :)

he speech wasnt bad but it wasnt good. it was a normal speech. also my mom liked the quaker mascot and took like 15 pictures of it b/c she thought it was really cute (no homo)

^haha my mom tried to buy like 3 sweatshirts. and i haven’t even decided where i’m going to college yet! that’s like $150 bucks, i made her put them back lol
