And it all boils down to money...

I was recently notified that I was accepted into the Newhouse school of journalism at Syracuse--which, to be honest, was quite surprising (long story short, I moved across the country as an IB Diploma candidate in between my junior and senior years... it didn't fare too well for me or my grades, unfortunately). I'm extremely humbled and would absolutely love to attend, but as an out-of-state resident, I can hear my parents' wallets scream every time I mention the word "Syracuse".

I've applied for financial aid (FAFSA and CSS Profile, all filed before deadline), but have yet to hear anything back. I've looked through a bunch of outside scholarships, but have yet to find one that fits me.

Here's my situation in short:

My parents are retired
I have triplet (yes, triplet) brothers whom are currently sophomores and will be attending college
My 12-year-old sister will also be attending college
We moved from Texas to Virginia in summer 2012 and have not sold the house yet
I live right outside of DC (so I am definitely out-of-state)

Admittedly, I'm kind of feeling lost and hopeless at the moment. It's my dream to attend Newhouse, but it's not financially feasible. I've considered directly calling the financial aid office, but I feel like it would get me nowhere quickly. Surely I can't simply pick up the phone and say, "I really want to go here, but I can't afford it, so can you give me some money?"

This is a daunting process; any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Would you consider making an appointment with a financial aid officer on campus and meet in person? Your story is compelling and worth telling. Try to combine your visit with an admitted student day. I wouldn’t give up easily. I believe persistence and humility combined with a little begging can only help. I wish you the best of luck!

Good luck with your quest. Being out of state is not a consideration for SU as it is a private university, not a state school. Talking about how much you love the school and visiting will definitely score points.

You shouldn’t call them for more money before receiving your financial aid package because well…you don’t know how much they gave you. You should call to check the status of your financial aid though and ask when it will be fully processed.

I emailed and they said the Adcom decides the merit scholarship and their decision is final. They said they can tell me why I did not get merit aid. I’m bummed.

@anghad the OP is talking about financial aid. Financial aid differs from merit aid. Financial aid is sometimes negotiable
