I'm having really mixed feelings about getting accepted. I was accepted into Newhouse, which makes me really excited about getting into a good journalism program. On the other hand, it seems like SU has nothing else to offer me. It's in the middle of nowhere in the freezing cold, and www.theu.com says it's in the ghetto and gives housing a grade of C+. If you've visted, watch the videos on www.theu.com and let me know if it really is as bad as it seems.

i just got back from 4 days there...it's cold in the winter, sure, but it's bearable...you just need to find different things to do instead of going outside, that's all...lots of kids have cars and will drive you to class if it's terrible, but mostly it's just that you won't want to take a leisurely stroll...

then again, i've lived in upstate most of my life...but seriously, Newhouse? that's amazing...you should take it.

I was accepted in Newhouse as well (dual major - print journalism and international relations) and have the same concerns you do (not really about the housing so much as it just seems to have little else to offer...). I don't know when scholarship offers come out, but if I'm paying full freight I definitely won't be going. No reason to spend the extra money is all.

I visited during the summer. The housing wasn't amazing - but compared to many big state u's, it's luxurious, haha. Housing anywhere you go will be pretty crappy. It's just a bed - that shouldn't be the reason you decide to go to school there or not. The campus was a great size - small enough to get around in the freezing cold, but not so small it felt stifling. The dorms were all decently close to the center of campus. Mostly, I'm concerned the environment would just get me down. It was overcast the day I visited, and I hear it is like that pretty much all of the time! The campus and buildings looked pretty gloomy. The city was not as bad as people make it out to be. It's small, yes, but the downtown area is actually really adorable. It reminds me a lot of my home city, which is definitely not "a ghetto". It doesn't seem to have much to offer in the way of nightlife (like a lot of music venues) or attractions compared to other cities of its size, though. As far as bars and restaurants, plenty.

Newhouse is indeed a great school and program, though. The facilities are absolutely fabulous. I don't know if you've heard, but currently Newhouse consists of buildings Newhouse 1 and 2, and when I visited, they were already constructing the third! The communications school is huge and top-notch. The students it attracted also seemed very intelligent and well-spoken.

Syracuse is not the "middle of nowhere," I mean it's no NYC, but its not like living in Lake Placid either. And SU is not in the "ghettos" of Syracuse.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I've been rethinking, and my feelings about SU are getting a lot better. I plan to attend one of the Spring sessions in April.

ive been really considering it but cant make a very solid decision until i find out about credit transfer and about financial aid, so when i get that i will make a decision. those are the main deciding factors. i want to go somewhere it snows.

Hey wats up guys. Im a freshman @ syracuse in the college of arts and sciences. You guys seem to have a handle on what SYR can offer you in term of academics so I'll let you know about the social aspect.

Syracuse on the weekend is what Old School, Van Wilder, Animal house, all those movies base their **** on. No joke. Frats, house parties, drinking on campus, bars, the football/bball games; its all there. If your remotely interested in that..ya you'll have the time of your life here.

from the students I know that go there, as long as you make smart decision and don't for example walk outside at night alone- things like that you should be fine.

there are nice parts and not so nice parts of Syracuse :-\ but isn't it like that everywhere?

Love the sports, although bummed Basketball shut out of March Madness. But, what about if you're more of a social drinker, not that into Frat/drunk parties, etc.

Haha, it's a common misconception to think that you have to be blackout drunk to have a good time at a frat party. I know plenty of people who drink socially and even though I myself am in a fraternity I also have those nights where I just kick back a couple brews and watch a movie.

Let me throw some advice at all you guys...you're going to have fun in 99% of the colleges out there; its college!! Sure you maybe have a little bit more fun at a big school like USC than maybe NJIT, but it'll still be good none-the-less. You need to figure out if the academic programs cater to your needs. Syracuse is an absolute blast, but that's only 2/7 days. Actually thursday and tues count so that makes it 4/7...but still. Don't worry about having fun. It's always gonna be there.

Regarding the question about the drinks and drugs policies; an absolute joke. Everyone drinks/smokes in the dorms; just don't be retarded with it and walk around w/ a Corona in your hand and a joint in your mouth. We actually paid homeless people to get racks back when I first got here. Funny stories about that...

The winter is cold yes

If you have a decent ID you can get in, but they do raid alot. I was on my way back from buying beer with a friend and the cops were setting up a raid. I had to walk by literally 10 cops with two thirties, made it back safely.

You dont need to be in a frat to go to a frat party. If you know a person in a frat it makes it alot easier to get in.

For instance with the drugs, I personally do not do drugs, but i did hear of DPS going to some kids room on my floor lookin for drugs. He hid it well i heard. and another example is on my way out tonight to go study the hall smelt like pot from a kid smokin in his room. Not the smartest of ideas. You def. can get in trouble.

Cuse is great, I personally love it, sports, parties, cool kids

a word to the wise is alot of the Newhouse kids and faculty are snooty... so if you dont like that.... It isnt enough to not make you go though.

Some are. Most arent. One of my better friends is in Newhouse, and he is fine. Its not enough to sway your choice. TRUST ME!!!!! Dont even let that play into your decision. You will always get those kids no matter what school you go to that think they are the next big TV person.
