Also: I put that I was Hispanic on my apps (from Spain) so may qualify from URM status

Applications: UNC Chapel Hill, Wake, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Northwestern, Wash U, Boston U, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, Emory

Can you rank my chances at these places?

Thanks!

bump.........

Not to be mean, but do you seriously think a Spainard is a URM?

Ha ha. It's okay to be mean. I told her it was a bad idea to put, but hey, it's not my application. Regardless of that, anyone has any suggestions? She also wants to add she attended a summer program for talent youth at Vanderbilt.

bump ....

lol. I am quite sure admissions will find out she's lying by putting Hispanic unless her parents are actually Hispanic. Or, they might find out later and then kick her out.

Ha ha. Well, she's not TECHNICALLY lying. And I doubt they'll find out (Spanish last name). Problem is: Her grandfather is from Spain. That's it. That's her claim. And everyone here is saying everything I told her already. So if she gets in trouble, it's her own fault. However, overlooking anything like that, what are her respective chances?

You should do the decent thing and report it to her schools.

No, that would be really mean of me. Actually, I put up a post about this same issue on the Harvard thread to see what people thought. Surprisingly, half of the people thought what she did was acceptable, half of the people agreed with you. Still, I could never turn someone else in for something like that, even if I thought what she did was highly unethical. I have no desire to "bring her down," but I'll live with the satisfaction that if she gets into a top school, it will be for an unfair reason. Note: I'm not telling her any of this; she doesn't even know this site address. Honestly, I just wanted her to help her evaluate her chances at different places (and sort of quell her enthusiasm for Harvard).

So if you saw someone cheating on a test that you knew would be curved, you wouldn't do anything about it?

I guess that shows how much you care about ethics.

Ha ha. Ouch. A test is different because I can directly solve the problem; and actually I care a lot about ethics. You weren't witness to the bitter "we hate her for doing this" debate. The issue is, I can't call up an adcom and say "hey, my friend lied," because then I look bitter and caddy - I'm applying to a lot of the same places and I don't want to sound like I'm trying to take her out. Ultimately, I think the adcoms would see it as selfish. And I think they'll realize on their own that she's not actually Hispanic because she put Spain as country of origin.

drop emory and add UVA instead

Well there's another lie, she's not from spain, her grandfather is from Spain.

Should I be able to put an African country as my country of origin since I'm sure one of my ancestors was born somewhere in Africa?

(Laughter), yes, I agree with you. Well, not in a literal sense, but with your point. Again, I really did have another thread about this a long time ago. Surprisingly, half of the people agreed with what she did. However, another one of my friend's father works for a big-name university and he says it only counts if you are half. Oh well ... her loss ... or gain. And again, azmodan, I also oppose her actions.

I think people would respond to her stats if they knew her GPA

azmodan shut up. theres a difference between ethics and honoring friendship. either u be a moral jackass or u just stand behind them. whether or not u consider this "cheating" which its not very big anyways.

Second, she IS hispanic. a person that is hispanic originates from either Spain or a Spanish-speaking country. She has all rights to say that she is hispanic. That is the correct definition of being hispanic. I live in arizona where 30% or so are hispanic and yes, spain counts as hispanic. though she may not qualify for URM status, she is indeed hispanic. that is why they ask you to specify. Asians only burma, cambodia, laos, mongolia in east asia count as URM, china/japan/korea/taiwan do not but u are still asian are u not? this is the same with hispanic)

azmodan...if you are a minority you DO put what country u come from. asians specify which nation (even if u are 3rd, 4th, 5th generation). they dont ask african americans to specify.

azmodan u should learn before u criticize. jelly is only supporting a friend

ur friend is applying to many reach schools. she doesnt have very many matches...wakeforest is perhaps that only match. she needs to find more matches. they rest are iffy

So if your friend cheats, you should let them get away with it?

By your logic I can put down that I'm African because all human beings originated from Africa, I'd just have to go back far enough.

And btw, nice job contradicting yourself in the 3rd paragraph.

Okay, everyone needs to chill. You have no idea how hard I tried to get her not to put that down. I cannot be the America of the high school setting (morality police). I am tired of your condescending remarks; I do not post on these boards to be yelled at. I wouldn't be surprised if you were Harvard EA. All of the Harvard kids take pretentious and condescending to a whole new level. And for the record, I am not standing behind my friend; if your friend smoked pot, would you turn them in on drug charges? If your friend was speeding, would you signal a police car? I do not in anyway approve of what she did, but it is not within the realm of acceptability to "turn her in." If you want to turn her in, do it yourself and I wouldn't care. But unlike you, or her for that matter, my life objective is not to bring other people down in the name of "ethics," which I think is often disguise for self-benefit.

As for the people who don't go online just to condemn others, for the person who asked, I have no idea about her GPA. Probably about 4.8 weighted (we have a weird scale) and 3.8 unweighted.

I think you're a little wrong Shrek. NC students easily get in UNC. I say she'll get in everywhere but the Ivies, NW, and WashU. But thanks!

is she an NC student? i failed to read that. azmodan u are obviously not a minority. they only ask hispanics and asians to specify. african-americans dont specifiy because most ARE many generations in the united states.

and no i do not report friends that are cheating. who cares. its highschool 99% of the population cheats. u are probably the 1% that doesnt

Thank you shrek. I don't approve of cheating; I don't do it. But I know people do. Perhaps it is wrong of me not to report them. I suppose I believe in karma.
