Animal Sciences at CALS?

Hey everyone!

So, I really want to major in animal sciences/zoology in college (I'm currently a kinda' confused junior, lol), but when reading the description about the animal sciences course, it seemed that it focused more on, say, animal farming and animal than actual zoological studies. Could anyone clear this up for me? Would you be working with smaller animals (like cats and dogs, for example) and learning about their bodily functions/systems in animal sciences, or would everything be related to the farming industry? And if animal sciences is more of an agricultural course, in which college would I be able to take a zoology course (or the equivalent)?

Thanks! :D

Well, it really depends on what you concentrate in. There’s a core set of animal science classes, and then there are concentrations. Dairy science is one example of a concentration, and as you might expect, a lot of its classes focus on ag and dairy operations. However, other coursework focuses on pre-vet studies or zoology. I have a friend who took a research job with the Smithsonian studying the behavior of tigers, so I can assure you that if you take the right coursework in the animal science program you can launch a career in zoology.

Oh, great, thanks! That cleared so much up. :)
