Hi guys I chanced myself already for USC but went to a USC thing up in Seattle and they mentioned that Annenberg has only a 17% acceptance rate. Soooooooo I was wondering if anybody could chance me for Annenberg? Thanx!

Between the summer of sophomore and junior year I was in a play that my school took to the world famous Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland
Was in a select choir that went to Japan freshman year and Washington DC in 8th grade

Attended Boys State
3 years in the school newspaper (copy editor junior year, editor-in-chief senior year)
Volunteering to help put on local communtity races
Served as a page twice for the State Legislature

Your EC's are great and test scores are good.

Did you already apply?

You might want to change the wording on the ECs. Saying something is world famous might come off as pompous and you might need to clarify "Boys State" (for what?) and the local community race thing. Also, 8th grade isn't so important, even though it's a continuation of choir. Just mention Japan.

And just in general, you need to mention when exactly and how long, too.

Don't worry I didn't word it like that. I was just trying to add some perspective that in the theater community the Fringe Festival is a pretty big thing.

"Boys State" is a mock government thing that every state has. It's indirectly tied to the Armed Forces and the colleges know what it is. For chancing purposes just consider it like a leadership conferences thing.

You look great. Your letter of intent is also really important, but your high school stats look fine and your ECs are rather good.

To put in perspective, journalism/communications is a popular major, and, quite honestly, not the most competitive people apply. So don't let the acceptance rate scare you.

Do you have a specific program in mind? (Communications, broadcast journalism, print journalism, etc.)

I think you have a very good chance and strong, relevant extracirculars. I'm assuming you're also male, which is a plus because Annenberg overall is about 75% female.

I'm going to have to take issue with TrojanTransfer though about the applicant pool. The communications major may still have the image of an easy program, so it probably does draw candidates looking for an easy pass. However, the journalism school is more competitive and draws very motivated and driven people. I haven't met anyone who would consider it an "easy" major or chose it to escape the more difficult programs at USC.

The accepted Annenberg-ians/ites/whatever are all go-getters, but a lot of the people who apply aren't so much. That can be said for every major, but journalism (such as hot girls wanting to be news anchors) is extremely popular and there will be a bunch of people that, sadly for them, aren't strong candidates.

@chs: No, the assumption that guys may have an easier time getting a spot since girls are already over-represented and admissions people are always looking for as much balance or diversity as possible.

I'm a senior in the broadcast journalism program if you have any specific questions about the major.

TrojanTransfer: Thanks, i see what you're saying.

Ned: Wow I misread that like 5 times as saying 75% male, my bad. Wow I have sooo many questions. What are the internships like? How do you enjoy USC? Is it super hard to get a good job in the area? I come from the Pacific Northwest and keep hearing about the bad air in LA. Is that true or just bitterness from a bunch of people in the land of the rain? In Broadcast journalism does everybody receive a good amount of training or do the top kids get to be the anchors all the time? Basically, what's it like?

Oh and is broadcast harder to get into than print or PR?

I don't think they really look at majors as much as much as if they think you are qualified for Annenberg in general. (I am a freshman Annenberg PR student). Also, and I know this doesn't apply to you as much- but for other applicants, having ECs that pertain to specific experience in whatever field you're interested in is always a plus. (Ex. I was on a National PR Team in High School). Also-- if you are in the LA area, or able to get there, I would reccommend trying to get one of the optional interviews they offer, although the spots might all be filled by now..

The career office at Annenberg is very well connected to Southern California and should be able to help you with a job. However, a lot of broadcast majors find entry level jobs in smaller markets and have to move away from L.A.

The "training" is very immersive and more thorough than theory-based programs at other schools. Broadcast majors typically end up doing work for USC Annenberg TV News or USC Annenberg Radio News , both of which are entirely student produced and give great hands on experience. The anchor slots at both programs are by audition only, but the other positions are open to anyone.

Other people here may have opinions on the air quality, but I don't think it's a huge problem. It definitely isn't has fresh as the Pacific Northwest and there will be days when the smog or wildfire smoke makes it a good idea to stay inside. Once you are here, few people seem to complain. Unless you have grave respiratory problems, I wouldn't let the air quality influence your decision.

Although my Pacific NW son was excited to come home to snow this week, he has no complaints about the weather or air quality in LA. The fires were an odd experience, but not a problem for him. He's thrilled to be at SC!

I wouldn't say it's a guarantee but it does help when you go to apply for jobs because you have a resume tape with on air experience. The internships you get also make a big difference and can lead to that first job as well.

Please see my earlier post about media scholar, Henry Jenkins, who will be joining the SC faculty. His remarks about SC's position in this field are worth reading. There is a link to the entire article, which will give you more insight about Annenberg's reputation.

CNN headquarters is in Atlanta. I know one of the executives is a female SC graduate. In addition, Kyra Phillips who has a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism '90, anchors the afternoon edition of CNN Newsroom. She has won four Emmys and two Edward R. Murrow Awards among other honors.
