My son goes to a performing arts high school. He plays in three musical groups, which are classes during the day and also after school at times. In addition to sports, these are his major activities but they're also classes. Would you list these as activities as well? Thanks!

Yup

We did. After all, the performances were after school. Basically our approach was to make sure that everything our kids did outside of the classroom was listed somewhere. I can’t remember the categories and I think they often change, but there’s often more than one place something can go - volunteer work might be an activity, or it might be work experience. Sometimes a kid who does a lot of things may want to bundle related activities together. For example my younger son was concert master of the freshman orchestra so it got listed separately, instead of just four years of orchestra which he would have done otherwise.

Definitely

The problem with “bundling” is that now the character restriction for each activity is stringent. (I’m currently pulling my hair out. I’m wondering if abbreviations should be used!!!)

D2 made every letter count and did use abbreviations. She also used caps to draw attention to certain things.

In OP’s case, number of hours would be hours outside of classroom.

Absolutely abbreviations are fine. I know we had to resort to some too.

Don’t forget about what books he is reading. More colleges are asking this. Dial back on the sports, TV, computer games and Facebook.
