Essay topic:
A mistakenly cynical view of human behavior holds that people are primarily driven by selfish motives: the desire for wealth, for power, or for fame. Yet history gives us many examples of individuals who have sacrificed their own welfare for a cause or a principle that they regarded as more important than their own lives. Consciencethat powerful inner voice that tells us what is right and what is wrongcan be a more compelling force than money, power, or fame.

Assignment: Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame, or power?

There are a lot of motivators such as money, power, or fame. But unfortunately, these motivators are only for those who are self-concerned. However, conscience is the only motivator that makes us to care not only about our well-being but also about others' welfare. Several examples from history and literature can prove this.

As demonstrated by Mother Teresa, conscience teaches us to be altruists. She was born in rich family, where her all needs were satisfied. She was very happy, but yet she thought that it was not enough. She felt very sorry about poor people, whose great number of them were dying everyday. Teresa then realized that she needed to do something for them in order to be truly happy. When she was 18 years old, she left her warm home, and went to India. At that period, multitudes of people in India suffered from femine. Teresa helped to those people by offering them food and shelter, and saved millions of lifes. That is why people called her "Mother Teresa", the mother who cares of people as if they were her own children. Therefore, that inner voice, which we call conscience, played the paramount role in that choice that she had made in her childhood. The choice that saved dozens of millions of people.

In "Three comrades" by Erich Maria Remarque, author depicts the story about three best friends, who knew each other since childhood. All of them grew up in poor families and had not so happy childhood. Despite that difficulties they were faithful to each other. But when the story reaches its climax, one of those friends , Jimmy Ho, started to work in a big company, while others were simple farmers. A big gap appeared between them. Jimmy became very arrogant due to his financial status, and finally other two friends lost the motivation to keep in touch with him. After some period of time, Jimmy started to realize that they were irreplaceable people in his life. He gave up his new work, and returned to his hometown and started to work in farm with his best friends. Conscience was a catalyst of his returning to home. Jimmy understood that money, which he wanted more and more, started to change him, and therefore he felt guilty in front of his friends. Conscience did not let him hesitate on choice between his friends and money.

In conlusion, Mother Teresa's self-sacrifice and Jimmy's regret clearly show that conscience is, indeed, the powerfull inner voice that is more compelling force than money, power, or even fame.
