Another "Is this cheating?" thread

Absolutely it's wrong. Allow me to pose you a similar situation:

Student leaves exam room to go to the bathroom. A teacher stands outside. Student has hidden the textbook in the bathroom, and uses it to check a few things.

Is that cheating? Absolutely. It was cheating because it used aids not allowed on the exam.

Unless the teacher in this example set an open-book exam, looking up answers while away from the exam room was absolutely and unequivocally cheating. The teacher was stupid to not realize that that would almost certainly happen, but it was cheating nonetheless.

Co

Yes, it's cheating, and shame on the teacher for failing to clarify that and for allowing extra time with an unsupervised time gap.

No, the teacher is not stupid, and knows that students will do this. In offering the oppurtunity for anyone to come back after school and complete the test, he is affording anyone who wants to check their answers, the ability to do so.

I have done worse.

Also in my classes if you turn it in before the bell rings (fast test takers) and other people worked to the bell (slow test takers) and got, say 15 minutes, the next period; you can't un-turn your test in. So if you turn it in, it's in. Which sort of sucks, because then the people who take slow tests have the possibillity of cheating, improving their grade, affecting the curve.. Oh well. I'm glad I've always known my math thus far...

hahaha me too

It is cheating, even if the teacher did not design a time-appropriate final and did not explicitly say that students could not study during the break.

Most cheaters' dishonesty eventually catches up to them in a big way.

I say most, not all, because I am sure that there are cases of chronic cheaters with the kind of wiles to escape punishment time and time again. I know a handful people with that ability. That's a kind of intelligence in itself, although not one any of us should admire.

I don't think it is cheating: I agree with others who say it is questionable. It's almost like a free pass. You have the chance to go back and double check your answers. If you don't take advantage of it and you feel confident, fine. If you want to study, sure.

But for myself personally, all that cramming would make things a lot worse for myself.
