another scholarship

Dale got an email from Dr Buell today congratulating him on receiving the Wilson Scholarship from the CS Dept. $3,000 I believe, renewable "at least once."

So now we are at $7,000 in aid for next year, plus in-state.

I am really starting to like this place!

Congrats! (My son was competing for that same scholarship- so I guess we know now he didn't get it. CSE dept. called last week and wanted son to visit with Dr. Buell, but he had a calculus test that day. Oh well...) We are happy for your son, though! Sounds like it couldn't go to a nicer person! By the way, have you gotten a computer for your son? We got the minimum requirement recommendations, but he's still trying to decide which computer will best "fit the bill."

Hi Greenville

Sorry we were competing for the same money. I thought maybe they had more than one to award. I hope some other funds are available for your son.

We haven't bought a computer yet, my wife and S will be at Scholars' Weekend and will check into at that time. Anyway, if we buy something now, it will be obsolete by September!!!!

Congratulations! The departmental scholarship is a VERY nice bonus!!!! I wish more departments had scholarships to give out. Unfortunately the biology department doesn't have much to give incoming freshman. I'm hoping more things will open up (should my daughter choose to go to USC) for upperclassmen.

I thought I left a message this morning but I guess it didnt register...
Namtrag..congrats to S on his scholarship...Grenville,I hope some extra $$ comes your way too.
For anyone going to Scholars Day,you'll have some great weather and if you go on a tour of Maxcy dorm, say hi to the blue eyed boy in the tiny messy room on the first floor left wing for me!!

Guess what?? Son got an email from CSE today! Apparently, there is more than one Wilson Scholarship!!
We are leaving tomorrow for a pre-planned weekend in the mountains (Gotta cool off in this 80 degree weather!)....otherwise, we'd be at Scholar's Day. Hope your son and family have a safe and enjoyable visit. Please post if you find out anything about CSE we should know. Have a great trip and bring your sunglasses!

Horray fror Greenville and S!!!
Gotta love those departmental scholarships!
Cooling off in mountains,Greenville? We still have snow melting...................

Turns out that Dale's Wilson award is only $2,000 per year for two years. For some reason I thought it said $3,000 in the application, renewable at least once.

Oh well, it's not like we will be turning it down for that reason!!!

namtrag,
How did you like Scholar's weekend? Was your son impressed with the CSE dept? We are going to be visiting this Thursday evening.

Dr Buell himself actually led the tour. My S and wife both commented they liked him pretty good.

They were not impressed with the area around the CSE building. The campus tour we went on in August did not go down that way, and my S said it is pretty run-down in the surrounding area.

I'm glad they liked Dr. Buell. We have seen the CSE building when we went to USC during Open House. It is definitely a "hike" down to that area, and much more "in-the-city" in appearance, unlike the horseshoe area. My son doesn't seem to mind that...but he is interested in what the computer facilities themselves are like. Did they get to tour any computer labs in the CSE building?

A computer lab was on the tour, and had a few rows of about 10 Dell computers in each row.

There was another smaller lab with computers which had 2-screen displays.

When we toured campuses we noticed a big difference between the "official" tour route and where the students actually were. Quite often the tour took you on a scenic stroll through some of the most beautiful areas, but you often did not see a lot of students. Then as you walked around on your own or tried to get a bite to eat, etc. you would see masses of students in their real element, often not the most beautiful part of campus. For example - the pit at UNC, supposedly the heartbeat of the campus, was probably one of the ugliest places I saw. There were other gorgeous parts, don't get me wrong, but most of the students were at the pit. I noticed this same thing at most campuses.
Hopefully your son can just take a couple of weeks to absorb it all and come up with a decision he can be happy with. I feel badly for the students today - it is much more difficult than when we were choosing a school. They seem to cast a much wider net and try to find the "perfect fit" when most likely there is no "perfect fit". There will probably always be those "what-if's" no matter where they choose so we can only try to support their decisions the best we can.
Good luck to all.

Yes, I cannot imagine some of the kids now applying to 20 schools. Why?

Our S would have only applied to VT and W&M if USC had not sent us some good literature about the McNair.

I remember applying to 2: UVA and W&M.

I do not envy you to have to sit back and wait for your s to decide ....I would be very anxious!
The good news is he has 2 good choices and a few weeks to think it over. I do really feel terrible for the kids that get their hearts set on a school and don't get accepted. That would be a tough one for me as a parent.
