Anthropology: undergrad -> grad acceptance

Does the "name" of the school matter in terms of exceptance at good grad anthro programs, like UChicago, or is it more about the achievements of the person? Does the name even count for anything?

I'm a senior in hs trying to pick an undergrad school, and I'm (fairly) certain that I would like to major in anthro. I've also

I've been accepted to Beloit, though I don't know if I can afford it......(higher tuition than Harvard) :) Good anthro, though. I think I would fit in because they have many different kinds of people. I got a fairly good scholarship at Knox, Wooster, and Kzoo though. I'm willing to pay more $ for a better program. sadly.

deferred at UMich (reach) and UChicago (huge reach), also applied RD to:
Kenyon
Oberlin
ConnColl
Trinity (CT)
Dickinson (for languages)
Bowdoin
Bates
Grinnell (good anthro)
Macalester (good anthro)
Denison

Most, if not all, are reaches, so not really expecting to get in.

For anthro, what should I do? I know some of the schools listed here have iffy anthro programs based on the # of profs, but there is a chance that I could change majors....

Going to a ‘name’ school may give you a tiny advantage in graduate admissions, but it’s generally not worth the debt that you would go into. And this is when we are comparing Harvard to, say, Kansas State or something (and perhaps not even then). Knox, Wooster, and Kalamazoo are all great schools with great reputations; I doubt that Beloit would give you an edge over any of those schools wrt to graduate admissions.

I think bigger factors in selecting your college should be 1) cost to you and your family; 2) where you think you will be most comfortable, and 3) where has a variety of majors in a general area in which you are interested. Resources on campus is another area to consider - the libraries, the student center, the study spaces, that kind of stuff. You may change your mind completely about anthro, so I wouldn’t pick a school just based on whether they have a good anthropology department - all of the colleges on your list are solid undergrad colleges and will all have good, solid anthropology programs. You don’t need to go to a name-brand school to go to graduate school.
