I saw a post created years ago that asked for any advice for a CAP student going to UTSA. I wanted to create one for CAP students attending UT Arlington. For anyone that has done the CAP Program at UT Arlington, would you happen to have any good advice towards picking classes, choosing dorms, joining clubs, etc? In my case, I plan to work as hard as I can to be accepted as a Computer Science major at UT-Austin.
If you know you’re a good student and don’t need the “cushion” CAP gives you, do not CAP. Externally transferring is not a bad option if there’s other school’s you’ve been accepted into or if community college is an option. I capped and after a semester, I transferred out because I realized I was wasting a lot of my time and money and I could transfer from my local community college. Not to discourage you, but it’s not too late to change.
If you’re not majoring in something within COLA I would not do it. (A current CAP student) I’m majoring in Government so CAP worked for me, but it is not for everyone. Many times I thought to myself why did I just not go to SMU or UNT or something lol
Dorms: Vandergriff, A hall, or KC!
Picking classes: make sure to take the pre reqs that you need to get into the school you wish to apply to at UT, get your core classes out of the way (these are usually easy and a gpa booster)
Clubs: Join clubs- but don’t let that get in the way of your studies! Some of my friends valued clubs more than studying and they did not meet the CAP requirements!
To those who have taken biology 1/2 at UTA, what professor did you take? All the biology professors have bad reviews except for one who doesn’t have any reviews.
I don’t know about CAP but I got in through the provisional program (predecessor to CAP) where I only had to do a summer at UT Austin and then I get admitted to COLA. Thing is, being in COLA isn’t a bad thing because CONS majors are still open and noncompetitive, not to mention many of them gives good career options too (like mathematics). Computer Science is probably not a very open option, but I did get into Conkrell College of Engineering briefly (I transferred to Geology when I realized ASE has rather limited career options) so you are NOT stuck in COLA majors if you do the CAP. Most importantly, your first two year at any accredited university will be the same regardless of your major. All majors have to take the required English/Humanities/History/Government/etc. classes so work on that while you CAP. Get as high of a GPA as you can and even College of Engineering will be open to you.
Furthermore (this is straight from the CAP requirement homepage), if you successfully complete CAP requirement and got into UT, your GPA would be high enough to allow you to transfer to most competitive majors at UT anyways (except Computer Science or Business of course).
