I have taken a few AP classes and done well in English.
I'm in my fourth year of Spanish and taking a college in the schools U of M Spanish class this year. I have consistently good grades in that.
I just started my senior year. Last trimester of my junior year I got a 3.0 and that's what brought my overall gpa up to a 2.45. I know that's bad. If colleges at least count the first tri of senior year I can bring up my gpa a little.

The past couple years have been tough at home and my grades have suffered. I know I can write a strong essay, I love writing. I can also get really strong letters of recommendation.

I want to go into journalism and media communications or maybe become an English teacher. I know I might have to go to community college for a year or two, but do I have a chance of getting into any college/university right away? I live in Minnesota but really want to go out of state. Although, at this point, I realize I that might not be an option.

Any advice?

Given that you’ve taken some AP classes, shown improvement gradewise (and can maybe explain the lower grades to adcoms with the tough home situation), and have decent ACT scores, I think you definitely do have some options. How far out of state do you want to go, and how much can you afford, tuition-wise? You definitely have a great shot at some of the smaller state schools (a couple midwestern examples: Southern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, etc.), and if you did well at places like those you might have the opportunity to transfer to a flagship state university or better private school after a year or two.
