Any current South Asian students willing to answer my questions?

I wanted to know how life is for south asian students on campus. I heard it's very clique, but I'm obviously not sure..

Hi there. I’m south asian and a junior. First of all, life is just fine for south asians at Penn - it is like it is for anyone else on campus lol.

Penn is very cliquey, yes, and there definitely are cliques which are majority south asian (though not of any particular south asian ethnicity - they are usually mixed with bengalis, pakistanis, south indians, etc.). These cliques are usually a result of students being members of the same south asian cultural organizations on campus which causes them to hang out with each other more often than with other students on campus.

If you want to hang out with south asians on campus, just join one of those cultural clubs. Personally, though, I’d say if you get in and decide to come to Penn, you really should branch out of your cultural group and meet other people as well.

How big is the Bengali students association?

How many Bengalese are you expecting in order to have their association?

Sizable compared to other top schools, imo.

But within Penn it is very tiny compared to the South Asian Society or some of the other Indian cultural groups like the Hindu Students Council.

*Bengalis

PS: I’m not Bengali. =p

iamanapp - so there is a Bengali group at Penn?

^ Yup

10char

Bengalese… LOL

I would expect that you wouldn’t really have an idea, but do you happen to know how many members like 20 o 30, maybe less?

There are also Cincinnati Bengals.

why would you want to come all the way to the US, and then concentrate your association with the same people you could be with at home?

I’m from America, and it’s no different than the way asians tend to gravitate toward asians and jews tend to gravitate towards jews…
