Trying to connect with any other families who may be going through the application process now, after the regular admission cycle. Would love to hear your story on why your child is applying late–military family/sudden job change/issues with child’s current school, etc. And how you feel realistically about your child’s chances of getting accepted to the schools he/she applied to. My daughter has all her stuff in and we’ve officially entered the waiting period. Her application probably won’t even be looked at until after April 10th, and we realize she may just be applying to waitlists at this point, but we had to give it a shot. I have this love/hate relationship with the CC threads right now—so fun to read through the BS decision boards but every thread makes me that much more nervous about her chances! So, anyone out there in a similar boat??
I am curious where your DD decided to apply this late? Several schools have rolling admissions, I hope she is able to find one that is a good fit for her!
@makp715 I feel like I’d jinx her chances if I mentioned the schools she’s applied to Let’s just say we contacted several schools in advance to inquire about rolling admissions and that we would need FA. We did not want to bother applying to schools that did not feel like there would be a possibility of FA after the regular round of admissions. This ruled out a couple schools we were really keen on (George School!! sigh) but we didn’t want to waste anyone’s time. I think the hardest outcome for me will be if she does get accepted but is told we are waitlisted for FA, since they all have budgets and limits. She is a very strong candidate—we’re kicking ourselves for not exploring the BS option earlier in the year. Honestly though, we thought the private high school she is currently in would be the one she’d eventually graduate from. 9th grade has gone well academically but the school fit is no longer there for our family. Crossing our fingers this works out!!
Are you limited to a specific area? I know there are some great southern schools that have rolling admissions and excellent academics. (They didn’t have hockey, so they were out for us). If location is not an issue, you might broaden your area search.
@buuzn03 definitely not restricted to any area, would prefer the east coast though. Haven’t explored the schools in the south too much, Foxcroft in VA is the furthest south we’ve looked. The academics at Foxcroft didn’t seem as challenging or as rigorous as the school DD is currently in and when she sat in on some classes it pretty much confirmed it for her. Would love to hear about any other schools you may know of!
I’ll go back and look at some of our searches when we started–hopefully that will give you a starting point! We are about to do this for buuznkid2 anyway
thank you @buuzn03! I’m not as familiar with the BS in the south and always love to hear about new schools. Where does buuznkid1 go to school?
He just committed to St Marks School a n Southborough. We are BA virgins…learning as we go!!! But he wanted BS to continue to play hockey, so NE it was…we live in the south so buuznkid2 may stay closer to home :-SS
That’s wonderful, congrats @buuzn03! Hockey may be the motivation for another narcissediazkid down the road so I don’t know that our family will completely escape the lure of those NE schools
We did this last year with my younger daughter, who wanted to transfer from another boarding school. We took the same approach you did in terms of calling/contacting schools directly to see if it was even worth sending in an application. Since we were fairly well versed in BS (older girl is a recent graduate), and had other criteria (related to geography and ability to train in a generally unsupported sport) in mind, the range of options was not that large.
So I’m saying it’s possible…but you have be both extremely realistic/flexible and focused/strategic in your approach. Meaning, I wouldn’t count on an admit with FA to any of the most popular/most selective schools that get mentioned on this board. But if you are willing to look outside the usual suspects, it can happen. I’ll send you a PM with some details/advice.
I sent you some schools but I would definitely listen to @SevenDad …he is lauded as the BS extraordinaire! You are in the best hands!
@buuzn03: Eh, some would say full of BS!
I would add some southern schools to the list. Baylor, Asheville, Bolles, St Andrews to name a few. Baylor was pretty wonderful, just not realist for our family.
@momof3swimmers …some of those were on the list I pm’d! Glad for the backup!
Thank you @momof3swimmers! Hadn’t even heard of Baylor or Bolles.
The only reason I didn’t send you Bolles is because of their low boarder to day student ratio…but it’s a great school!
Baylor is also low boarder ratio but a special place.
If looking at Baylor look McCallie too. If looking at either, definitely look at Indian Springs, which academically is head and shoulders above any BS south of Virginia.
@narcissediaz98 looks like you’re getting great recommendations! These people know their stuff! Keep us posted! Definitely want to know how this works out for you!!
Thank you for the recs @GoatMama
Yes @buuzn03 will keep you all posted, this is why I love CC, the virtual support truly means a lot! I did speak with George School again yesterday, because I just can’t shake the vibe that it would be a great place for my DD. We’re going to visit this coming Tuesday and they’ve made time to interview her while we’re there. If DD gets the same vibe after visiting, we’ll most likely apply. At this point, even if they caution us that the majority of their FA dollars have been allocated already, I think I’d still like to see what we would be offered, if they choose to accept her. If you find a schools that loves your kid back, you’ll spend the time trying to reconsider your budget a million ways to send her there, right? I’ll let you know how the visit goes when we get back. Obviously there’s a chance my vibe is totally off and DD won’t be interested in applying at all! :))
