Any "hidden gem" books for graduating students?

Looking for something like the Dr. Suess Places You'll Go book. Light but with a hopeful message, for people facing transitions.

Any ideas?

Very current and enjoyed by a lot of graduates that we have given the book to, including our son, is The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College

[The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College: Harlan Cohen: 9781402280283: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/The-Naked-Roommate-Issues-College/dp/1402280289/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1366939445&sr=8-4&keywords=the+naked+roomate)

Not really a ‘light and hopeful message’ but very timely and really speaks to students issues today.

Everybody Poops?

Oops, different transition. :)

M

Two useful books: “Getting to Yes” by Roger Fisher–it’s about negotiation, but its usefulness extends to all sorts of interactions with people.

And the other is the old chestnut, “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” by Dale Carnegie. While some of the examples are very dated, the advice is really helpful.

The one I give along the lines of The Places You’ll Go is the book/CD version of Le Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance”. It’s not an advice book, a how-too book, or success book. It’s about a parent’s or loved one’s hopes and dreams for their child. I am not a country music fan AT ALL, but I love this song. And the book with illustrations for the song, is sweet.

ssea - what a sweet idea! I will try this for my DD.

It’s Okay if You’re Clueless by Terry McMillan. I have a stack of them that we give to college-bound high school grads (only bc it’s so much about going to college with no idea what you want out of life) every year. Short, tiny vignette chapters, honest, hilarious, reassuring. I also like Mr Rogers’ advice book, published posthumously.

“where’s mom now that i need her? surviving away from home” by betty frandsen…

has recipes, basic repairs, how to grocery shop, first aid and lots more,

Yes to “Getting to Yes” I read this book in college and have pulled it out and read it often when I faced tricky negotiations.
[Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In: Roger Fisher, William L. Ury, Bruce Patton: 9780143118756: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Negotiating-Agreement-Without/dp/0143118757/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366980660&sr=1-1&keywords=Getting+to+yes)
If you like that book, this one is also great:
[Getting Together: Building Relationships As We Negotiate: Roger Fisher, Scott Brown: 9780140126389: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Together-Building-Relationships-Negotiate/dp/0140126384/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366980683&sr=1-7)
I think some of the best practical advice comes from Cal Newport:
[How to Win at College: Surprising Secrets for Success from the Country’s Top Students: Cal Newport: 9780767917872: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/How-Win-College-Surprising-Countrys/dp/0767917871/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366980590&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=How+to+wim+at+college)
And Daniel Gilbert presents some thought provoking ideas on making ourselves happy:

Parent 56 - gave that to DS11 for Christmas this year as he’s moving into an apartment this fall!

There’s another one like parent56’s book-I got it for my S after he failed to remember that orange juice needed to be refrigerated…it’s “Help! My Apartment Has a Kitchen!”

Kennedy-be warned-I can’t listen to it without crying-and my older D is long out of the house!

When S graduated from HS last year, I gave him I Am a Pole (And So Can You!) by Stephen Colbert.

Can’t second this book enough.

[The Richest Man in Town](http://www.amazon.com/The-Richest-Man-Town-Inspired/dp/1575793105) is also a great, and brief, read.

This is a surprisingly good book.
