I've never heard of this before two minutes ago when I saw a thread on another forum. My daughter seems to have a pretty good average on her APs, wondering why I never heard of this and why she hasn't gotten anything from them.

How many APs has she taken and has she scored below 3 on any of them.

If she qualifies, College Board will automatically send a certificate. I’m not sure what all the cutoffs are, but my D received 2 certificates - AP Scholar and another one (don’t recall title). She received 4s and 5s on 6 exams.

[AP: Scholar Awards](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Qualifying for an AP Scholar Award – AP Students | College Board)

She’s taken 5 AP exams:
Soph: Spanish–3 (she wasn’t in the class but her teacher suggested she take it as she was finishing Spanish), World History–4
Junior: AB Calc–5, USHistory–5, English (not lit, the other one)–4

During Senior year she’s taking Stats, Psych, French and English Lit.

If the student qualifies (based on the criteria in the link posted above), the student will automatically receive a basic paper certificate in the mail. It really isn’t a big deal.

AP Scholar with Distinction
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

She should get this since she is averaging 4.2 on 5 exams.

My D just received her certificates this past Tuesday to include the exams she took this past May. They are sent seperatley from the scores. They may still be coming if you have not received one yet and think you should.

The main benefit that I see is that you can list it on the college applications in the honors/awards section.

S’s AP Scholar with Distinction and National AP Scholar award certificates came the other day. Now he is already a college freshman and has claimed credits for most of them. Is there any benefit of getting these awards? Does he need to list them in future applications for scholarship, etc?

@sunnydayfun: I was wondering the same thing. I guess it can go on a resume for now. I am confused that he got both the AP with Distinction and National. I thought it was one or the other, not both. hmmm.

No benefits. His high school days are over. Time to focus on his college achievements.

S’s certificate arrived today, so the OP’s may be arriving soon. He too is starting college, so no benefit really.

Thanks everyone, I have just never heard of it before last night, none of my friends mentioned their kids getting them, and wondered what it was all about or if schools had to opt in or something.

My son’s is messed up. Somehow he has two AP numbers and his previous tests were not listed on this years exam results, so he didn’t get the correct award. He wants to list it on college apps so we sent an e-mail to clarify (also so that colleges ultimately get all his scores).

Son had to have AP combine his AP score reports since he used different ID numbers in different years, small hassle but fixable. AP Scholar et al awards are automatic, nothing needs to be done. Just add it to HS accolades that are ancient history once college begins.

If your AP scores appear under two (or more) numbers you need to call and speak to a live human being and ask to have all accounts merged. It’s more common than you think. If your 2011 scores didn’t include scores from previous years your student has more than one account. Don’t think you’re being picky, your student earned the distinction and should receive the certificate. You also risk AP scores being kicked back by a university when you are trying to get credit if something doesn’t match up. You want them all in a single account.

Thanks. I sent an e-mail to them since the office was closed including all the info. It is clear he has two accounts with two different account numbers. I asked them if they would merge them, send me confirmation and a new certificate. I will call if I am not satisfied with the response.

mimk6 - my S also had to have his two accounts merged. No big deal. I talked to a human and it was taken care of within 2 weeks.

It’s cool when they get one of the AP scholar awards, but it’s even cooler when the college they attend awards credit or advanced placement for high scores. :-)
