Any March SAT takers debating taking May SAT?

Junior D took her first SAT test in March, 2009. She is debating whether to take a second shot at it again May, 2009 or wait until October 2009 (does this automatically rule out ED/EA)? She will take her SAT II's in June as she recognizes their differing significance and wishes longer to prepare.

Any March SAT takers thinking of doing the May SAT? It's such a short window.

Pros/cons?

It doesn’t seem like a bad idea to take it again when your preparation from the first try is still somewhat fresh.

If you have AP tests in May it might be a better idea to take SAT II’s related to those subjects during the same month. I’m planning to do this with chemistry and maybe literature.

It depends on her situation - does she feel like she was well prepared and just made some mistakes that she can avoid next time, or does she feel like she needs more preparation? If she was well prepared, May may be a good time to take it since the material will still be fresh in her mind. If she wants to spend more time preparing, October may be a better choice.

Personally, I will probably retake in June or October if I do retake because I’m waiting to get my scores to decide.

id wait until scores come out before deciding whether or not to retake

Most schools accept Oct and even Nov scores for EA/ED. But to be sure, I’d check the website of the schools your d is considering.

You’ll have to pay a late fee if you wait until your scores come back if you decide to register for the May date. I’m taking my 2 SAT IIs in May and possible 1-2 in June. I’m going to save my third SAT for October and maybe take a fourth one Nov/Dec if I’m really disappointed with my scores.

I’ve always preferred to take my subject tests in May, simply because that’s the week right before APs so the material will be fresh in my mind. I’m also retaking in June - maybe she might want to consider this route?

I’m pretty sure I’m taking them again. I might just sign up before my March scores because I don’t want to give CB anymore money by registering late lol.

to all of you for your insightful responses. D felt prepared after completion of her March SAT, yet wishes an extra month to prepare for the SAT specials which June affords. We’ll probably wait until October to repeat the SAT. Thanks again and good luck to you all.

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t take the SAT as many times as you can before a college deadline since the Class of 2010 can take it as many times as possible without having to sent all the scores.

^ Doesn’t mean every college will let us do that.

I’m waiting til I get my scores from March. If I got under 2300 then I’ll just pay the late fee and retake in May. Who cares if it’s the same month as AP tests b/c its not like I’m gonna study extensively for the SAT again if I do retake. I think June is best for SAT II because I will have been super well prepared after AP test, plus I’ll have a month to review the study guide books.

My son will take subject tests in May (while he’s reviewing APs in the same subjects) and SAT1 again in June. (Unless the March test score is stellar, but I’m sure there will be room for some improvement - he knows he skipped several math questions.) October test date is okay for most EA schools. (At least it was okay for MIT and Caltech.) My older son took the SAT 1 in May and the SAT subject tests in June, because he wanted to do some extra studying for physics when he wasn’t in the midst of APs.

i took the test in march, and i plan on retaking in may no matter what my scores are. i’m a bit of a perfectionist so even if i had my scores before registering, i’d most likely convince myself i could do better. i also plan on taking sat 2’s in june
