Anyone else get Delaware in D.C offer? I do not know what I think about it, really confused.
They’re planning for a huge freshmen class. Not only is UD opening the new very large freshmen dorm & renovated Harrington dorm that will replace Rodney & Dickinson. They’re turning Smyth dorm & the Ray street apartments into freshmen dorms. They want the extra $$$$$$$$ which they don’t really need because UD is one of the wealthiest schools in the country.
After reading all the posts I really get what everyone is saying. The thing is a lot do schools get 25, 30, 40 thousand apps a year. Thing is these kids who had their apps in for 15 plus weeks now should have received a decision no excuses. The kids and I know some who applied later in the process have heard and now some who applied way bf re being told there may not be room for them. You recieve an app evaluate it and make a decision. If a kid took the time to get their app in that early give them the respect of a decision in a timely manner. The whole high quality app received is not an excuse for some kids waiting, as I read above 19 weeks. It’s not fair but life’s not fair I know. And FYI to all waiting my friend received acceptance letter today… Applied jan 3 1580 sat 83 gpa and not a very high rigor , he was stunned and told me he prob has to reject bc of money…so keep watching for the mail too…good luck friends wishing all the best !!
@Samb1715 what is that?? Delaware in DC
Basically they told me I was not accepted for fall but I could spend fall at some program in D.C and come back to Delaware in spring.
Never heard of it and neither has anyone I know. I am looking for anyone else who recieved letter.
As to the comments that they are looking for a huge freshmen class… I don’t believe that to be the case… they are losing a HUGE number of beds between the 14+ buildings in Rodney and Dickenson. To the contrary I believe they may be down a few freshmen beds but the housing will likely be the nicest in the history of UD. A school that has the reputation for pretty lousy freshmen housing with a great “bonding” experience. My D would still never trade her days in Dickenson for the world. I do believe they are limiting the option of housing for transfers and also anyone who has gone to “off campus housing” and looking to return to campus… For example my D has a roommate off campus that is due to graduate in Dec 15’. She was condsidering a return for a dorm room for fall 15’ semester. But she was not guaranteed a room.
Also I know how truly frustrating it is for those still waiting. I fear we will have many wait lists/rejections for those waiting as it was the case last year and this was starting by early March last year. I agree with Mwallenmd that UD needs to go back to the “old way” When my D applied three years ago UD was the very last school we would hear from by March 15th but as least we knew when our answer was coming. With the overwhelming popularity of the school and the huge demand placed on admissions it’s an overwhelming task. Having gone through the wait last year with my son I understand the pain of waiting… luckily for me, My son waited a bit longer than most but had an answer by end of Feb with an Early Oct submission. IMHO… he was kept waiting as long as he was because he was not a great candidate for the business school and they were waiting on other applications/and those accepting spots. My son did get admitted “university studies” and is working his way into the business school.
Also to those calling in… I feel your pain… I’m sure those who answer your calls give you the same answers over and over again. Just keep in mind you are pretty much NEVER speaking to anyone who actually makes decisions or handles the applications, it’s pretty much all of our children who had a job in the admissions office. They are given those “broken record” answers to dole out. Much like every other school. Hopefuly with a new director of admissions next year we will have more favorable results next year. Good Luck to all those still waiting.

I hope your posts are legit. “UD in D.C.” In my almost 10 year association (as parent and now alumnus parent) with UD I have never heard of anything like this. I have heard of students not being accepted for Fall admission and offered acceptance for the following Spring but never anything like this. Were you offered this with a specific major or for “university studies”? Did they give you any more specific information about this (i.e. where is it being held ? dorm space? dining? etc.). Perhaps they have made arrangements with a university in D.C. to do this as you would need dorm/dining space and classrooms/faculty to do this and I don’t see how UD could provide a very large range of courses to teach all the courses themselves (unless they were being taught by faculty at the other university). Perhaps there is some problem with the opening of the new/renovated dorm complexes and they don’t want to triple most all of the freshman in the Fall. Anybody else have any information about this? This sounds really odd. I have never heard of this being done at any other university (but perhaps it has).
@Mwallenmd … I was curious also so I did some research and found this article http://www.american.edu/spexs/delawareindc/

Thanks for finding this. It does sound very appropriate for certain majors. I couldn’t find anything about it on UD’s website with a brief search. Perhaps it is there somewhere. Thanks again.
I just got a letter saying that I was accepted to the Spring 2016 semester. It then says “For the coming fall, we invite you to consider a new option: Delaware in D.C. If you choose to join the Delaware in D.C. program, you will spend the fall semester living and studying on American University’s campus in Washington, D.C. You will complete 16 credits that will transfer into your degree program at the University of Delaware in the spring semester, and you will be on track to graduate with the Class of 2019.” I wasn’t expecting to be accepted to the Spring semester, but I still got accepted!
You’re welcome @Mwallenmd , my daughter was one of the students accepted into the world scholars program so when I saw the post about Delaware in D.C I was intrigued !
I wonder whose tuition/fees and other costs a student would have to pay for this first semester. It looks like American’s yearly tuition/fees is about 10K more than UD. I don’t know about the room/board fees but I can’t imagine Americans costs would be less than UD.
You are right , also I’m curious is this the first year that UD has offered a spring admit that you are aware of @Mwallenmd ?
According to this page:
http://www.american.edu/spexs/delawareindc/faq.cfm
the cost for the fall semester at AU is $23,227, not including transportation costs and other incidentals.
@Mwallenmd The cost for the Fall 2015 semester in D.C. is a total of $22,341. Tuition: $15,065, Mandatory Fees: $185, Room: $4,804, and the Dining Plan: $2,287.
LR4150 and Medapop;
Thanks for the specifics. So it looks like the cost for the semester will probably be about the same as on-campus at UD in the Fall of 2015. Again, it sounds like a great experience for students who might have an interest in it.

In the past UD has offered spring admission to at least a few students but as far as I know they did not offer any type of specific program for the first Fall semester for these students to attend. Good luck to your D in the World Scholars Program. It looks like UD is in the process of expanding the types of educational programs they can offer. I suspect these things are part of UD’s “Path to Prominence” Plan that UD initiated about 4 years ago.
Thank you @Mwallenmd , she has not yet made a decision , we will be attending the admitted students day on the 11th hoping to meet some accepted students and go from there.
My son also received the Accepted to Spring/option for Fall at AU in DC/optional Fall Waitlist letter. Interesting concept. I think if he hadn’t been accepted to Penn State he might seriously consider it…his first reaction doesn’t make me think he’ll go the DC route. We’ll see. Good luck all.
My out of state son got the Delaware in DC offer yesterday. He called me and told me he got denied. I am not sure what to think.
http://www.udel.edu/admissions/delawareindc/
It appears he has 3 (or really 4 choices): 1. go on the wait list for fall 2015. 2. if he doesn’t get picked up from the waitlist, would he like to attend UD in spring 2016? and 3. if he is interested in coming to UD in spring 2016, does he want to do the Delaware in DC for fall 2015? Or 4. forget the waitlist and forget DC and just accept the offer for spring 2016 but he still has to submit his deposit by May 1st.
In the FAQ’s you can read once you click the link above, FAQ #1 seems to say that after doing Delaware in DC in fall 2015, there will be NO financial aid when my son starts UD in spring 2016. And FAQ#20 says the the fall 2015 program in DC is not covered by any financial aid. What if he just wants to accept the spring 2016 offer?
When I click info about FAFSA on the portal, its says basically there is no info because either my son has not been accepted or we did not file a FAFSA.
Since I know we filed a FAFSA, I guess he really isn’t considered “accepted” even though the letter says he has been accepted for spring 2016? Did we submit the FAFSA for nothing because we aren’t even being offered the subsidized or unsubsidized loans let alone anything else?
Because it was his first choice school, I’d consider accepting the offer to start in spring 2016 and let him do a semester at our local community college taking some gen eds but not if there is NO offer of anything to help me pay $22,000 for one semester!
I will call on admissions on Monday to clarify but am thinking perhaps my son was right and we should just consider him denied and move on to one of his other options where he received some merit money and some financial aid money.
Good luck and congratulations to everyone attending UD or somewhere else.
