For those of you still waiting for a desicion, i just called admissions and was told desicions will be made by April 1st, im not sure why they tell some people mid april
@Mwallenmd I think I found the hidden answer: In the literature for Delaware in D.C. the program is referred to as " a semester-long program in which first-year, non-degree seeking students study at American University (AU) in Washington, D.C." Key words: NON-DEGREE SEEKING. I think non-degree seeking undergrads are not eligible for financial aid, including Stafford Loans. :-S
Waitlisted to Long Beach state and accepted to San Diego state
brucemag; Yes, I believe you are correct. That is the reason financial aid is not available for the first semester.
Is this the first year of this DC/UDel. program?
Yes
Does anyone know where the kids would be housed In the spring of 2016? are they guaranteed on campus housing?
Delaware always has a housing issue and they are expecting the largest class this year … It seems as U of D took a page from Northeastern and now BU admission offices by offering admission in Spring but create a program overseas for these select student for the 1stsemester. Basically game the U.S. News rankings by increasing their stats and ranking by offering all the border line kids the DC program. The DC stats will not be included in the U of D freshman class profile and it will drop the acceptance rate and raise them selectivity factor using the U.S. News rankings …it basically drives up their ranking and their prestige and NE has been doing this well for the past 10 years…
I guess they are trying to see if this works while also getting more Revenue …
While we are grateful our D was accepted for Spring 2016, we are becoming a little less enthusiastic. The “Delaware-in-DC” option (IMO) was poorly-conceived; the brochure highlights the valuable “internship” and “resume-building” experience this would be for those Spring 2016 admits; at 17/18 years old, I can promise you the LAST thing this group of freshmen is worried about at this stage is career planning. Of course, they made the DC option even more enticing by offering absolutely ZERO financial aid, so shelling out 25-30k out of pocket to send our student to a University (American) and city (Washington) they never wanted to be in the first place makes no sense.
It also appears that the students who opt of the DC program would still be ineligible for scholarships or grants; was told by Admissions the Spring 2016 admits would be treated like “transfers”; as far as housing, we can understand the focus is to find a place for the fall admits, so I know they can’t tell the families of the Spring 2016 admits anything about housing options at this point; we would like to think UD will put a plan in place to find housing for a likely significant number of spring students, but we are hardly confident.
Will be attending Decision Day for answers; UD has always been our D’s first choice, but it seems they have provided little to no incentive to enroll in the spring.
NewYorkMama;
UD in DC students are guaranteed on-campus housing in the Spring of 2016 (but not necessarily in any specific dorm). While at AU in the Fall they will be housed together in primarily triples (but some may be in doubles).
MD has also started a program where there is an option to live off campus and go to evening classes the first semester or do the first semester overseas. I didn’t think about the effect on the rankings initially but it does seem to be all about that game everywhere. My son said he was interested in going to the accepted students day on Sunday after he came back from visiting three other schools he was accepted to and participating in another accepted students day. But as the week has worn on, he seems to be leaning away from this option. Reading the info about the housing does concern me.
thank you for all of the postings with answers!!! much appreciated!
If the acceptance says accepted to Communications interest…is there another variant of this? like accepted to communications program?
I emailed admissions asking questions about financial aid (basically, asking for the results of our FAFSA) assuming no interest in the DC program. I opted to email rather than call because I would prefer to get answers in writing. My scenarios include either taking fall 2015 off completely education-wise versus taking gen eds at community college in fall 2015 and accepting the offer of spring 2016 admission.
Emphasis on admission NOT transfer.
Will share when I hear something.
Actually kinda worried to be honest. I am a transfer student and I applied in later January but haven’t heard a reply. I’ve actually been denied transfer twice by UD so I’m just kind of anxious though I think I’ve solved past issues that they’ve had with my transfer.
NewYorkmama:
From UD’s Communication Department website:
Students interested in Communication at the University of Delaware enter as Communication Interest (COMI) majors. Communication Interest majors complete four required courses in their freshman and sophomore years. These courses are: Principles of Communication Theory (COMM256), Mass Communication and Culture (COMM245), Communication and Social Behavior (COMM330), and Introduction to Communication Research Methods (COMM301). Based on their GPA in these four courses, the top 125 Communication Interest students will be admitted into the Communication major in June of their sophomore year.
do you know how many students come in with a communications interest? In other words, what is the percentage that get in to that major? I realize 125, but 125 of how many?
I’m sorry I don’t have any data to answer your question. Perhaps if you email the Communications Department at UD and ask them, hopefully they would be able to give you an answer. Best of luck.
April 1st - nothing in the mail; nothing on the portal
Thank you for trying, Dr. Wallen…I appreciate all the help you give out on this site…my daughter is thrilled she got in for the Spring 2016 semester…She is strongly considering the American University part of the program as well, but she also indicated she was interested in being on the wait list. This was her dream school from DAY #1. It is quite a story, because she actually broke her back when she was 16 years old (she was a serious ballet dancer) and it affected her studies quite a bit interfering with her G.P.A. because of the recovery (body brace for 4 months and continued pain periodically.) She did well on her SAT’s though (1890). Prior to visiting, she was not interested in the school because she wanted to go somewhere warm…I actually bribed her to go for a visit! The minute she stepped on campus, she fell more and more in love with the school…but was so worried she would not get in. I’m actually a psychologist and writing a book on this whole wonderfully crazy but stressful process that she as an applicant and I as a parent have gone through…I guess I am writing this now because I feel a sense of closure in a marvelous way…and we look at all of this as the glass half full. I can understand how many parents and kids are worried about the unknown, but after all we have been through, we also understand that life brings with it opportunities that come in mysterious forms, and not always very obvious. She had actually gotten into her second choice and committed, both psychologically and practically (we visited, she accepted.) We didn’t dream that she would get in after waiting so long for a response…she actually, when getting the offer 2 days ago of the Spring Semester acceptance, said an emphatic NO. The next day, as the morning rolled on, I started getting texts from her saying that U of Delaware was feeling more and more right, and while initially rejecting the possibility, she recognized she had dealt with her sureness of not getting in, by rejecting it as an option. But, it remained her dream school, and the rest of the day was a flurry of incredible emotions filled with pride and joy. She is a hard worker and very committed to all that she does. She is determined now, to get into the Communications major and my husband and I just feel very, very lucky.
I also feel that the University of Delaware will work hard to make the American University option a very successful and thriving one, as it is something I am confident they will want to use in the future. As this is the first class and year, it will be interesting to see how it unfolds, but my daughter is already thinking about internships and such. I must say, I am a bit surprised that she is giving up the relatively known (being admitted to a great University with incredible school spirit and one of the best Journalism schools in the country) for this adventure. But nothing in life is a guarantee, and those of us who have experienced life’s twists and turns know this. I wish everyone the best of luck and to you wa7945, hang in there, and let us know what happens. I do think things get delayed and the letter my daughter was sent also was dated March 20th but was not here in the mailbox until March 31st. We are definitely going to the April 18th meeting and have planned to stay the weekend to soak up the area, choosing to stay in Wilmington this time, instead of the Marriott on campus. Thank you for everyone’s patience and tolerance of letting me post this long response!
