If you scroll up in this thread to last year at this same time, you will see that my D received a letter that she was waitlisted just around March 10. She got a call that she was admitted off the wait list on April 25. I’m pretty sure she was not the first person “in line” for the spot she eventually took. It was a long few weeks, and she actually heard wll before many others did last year (at various schools)

Unfortunately there really is no way to know when or if you are likely to get off a wait list. Last year my D was on the wait list for 4 programs and she got into one of them. One she eventually was released from (read: rejected) and one she chose to release. The other she never heard from at all (not even to notify her that she had been wait listed! She had to call and find out from admissions, so we’ll never know if she would have eventually been admitted because I don’t think the department even remembered that she existed!)

The point I’m making is that waitlists are a mixed blessing. You still have hope, but you are just as much in the dark as you were before you heard. Not a clue as to whether you are likely to be admitted. I will say that it can’t hurt to let the department know if you are very interested you are in them. If it is true that you absolutely WILL accept a place there if offered one, they might be inclined to go with a sure bet than to offer the place to someone who will take several weeks to decide and may still decide not to take it. Schools want to get their classes set just as much as students want to know where they’re going. So an honest phone call to he department can’t hurt. (Although Otterbein is on Spring Break this week so I don’t think anyone will be there to take your call now)

Reading back through, I don’t know if this post is helpful at all, but it is an honest representation of one student’s experience!

P.S. Because this question was in our minds last year, No, there is absolutely NO difference between the students who were admitted off the wait list and the ones who got in right off the bat. They are all viewed the same, both by the faculty and fellow students. In fact, I don’t know that anyone besides Dr. Stefano and Teri Devlin even know who’s in which camp!
